Game over 28-14
Great start to the season for both grades !!
My feeling is that both grades will think they can do better.
Saints weren't bad, but in both grades, if we had 50% of possession and finished off well, we'd have won by 50.
In Mathews, Crowther is the real deal. He only got the ball a handful of times, but came up with a try assist, a great try, and a couple of runs that were the best of the day.
Pezet is a fast, slick half who made our first 2 tries with line breaks like a young Mullen slicing through the line.
Cant and Robinson were the forwards who impressed most, both strong, fast and mobile.
In Ball, Crossland and Madden are all class and made try after try for us, but also bombed a few by trying to be too clever at times. The whole forward pack looks quality. Big, mobile units, all of them. Alexander scored 3 tries from centre and looked like he might score every time he ran.
Needs to work on his fitness still. He is a massive guy who did some great runs, but spent a lot of time with hands on hips sucking in big breaths after all his runs.
Starford Toa scored a good try and looked good at fullback. Very hard running back.
Simon Asela had a couple of really good runs early and then went down with a knee injury that looked bad at first, but he eventually got up and limped off, and he came back on in the second half, still limping a bit. He did plenty of runs, but he was sucking in the big breaths and had hands on hips a lot after his runs. He nearly scored a great try near the end but was stripped of the ball just as he bent over to put it down. We got a penalty for that because he was just short of the line when stripped I think, and the 2 points put us 14 points ahead with less than 10 to go.
Thank you very much.

Again Billy well done most appreciated
Innisfail, Queensland actually.
I think this Instagram photo from the knights account shows the no try - hard to know if he kept contact all the way to the ground from that pic.
Report from the Herald.
Nice to see these games being reported.
Tom Baker is one big human being. His size and no nonsense energy conserving style reminds me of Matt Parsons - just another 20kg and he'll be a Parso clone.
Mathews highlights - knights start at just before 5 minute mark if you want to scroll forward. Looking at the highlights, I thought Crowther set up the 3rd try at the game, but it looks like it was Tyrone Nean, and the 5th try, scored by Crowther, was set up by a great pass from Nean as well. He played left centre in number 18.
SG Ball Highlights, Knights start at 11:20
Timanu Alexander had a lot of work to do to score that first try. His other 2 were a bit easier.
All the guys who trained with the under 20s summer squad - Crossland, Madden, Alexander, Baker etc, all looked a class above. They have all progressed a lot, especially big Tom Baker. Two years ago Baker seemed really lucky to get picked for NSW after missing most of the Mathews season and only have about 4 huge runs as a bench prop in the finals series, but he has come a long way. Brad Fittler described him as "a gangly kid", which was a fair description of the skinny 6'5" prop, but he has filled out now and you couldn't call him gangly now.

We play Balmain, who were flogged by Penrith in both grades last week.
Hard to work out form after one game, but you'd think we'll be too good for Balmain.
So where’s ol’ mate Bradman Best?
Injured. Back round 5 i believe.

The Toohey article linked above somewhere says Best had a shoulder operation in the offseason and should be back mid season.

Brock GREACEN comes onto the bench for Jack Gunton.
