2017 NYC Holden Cup

Hey @Billy, how do you compare this team to the one that made the finals a few years back?
I think that this side could be as good as 2014 and 2006 if we had all the young guys playing under 20s.
In 2014 we only had Tapine and Sione playing some games in higher grades, but mostly in under 20s, and in 2006 we had Mullen and James McManus in higher grades, but guys like Snowden, Paterson, Walsh, Dureau and a heap of others were available.
This year, match winners like Cogger, Lamb, Starling, Sam Stone, Nick Meaney and Cory Denniss are not going to be part of the under 20s for more than a few games - and if you look at those players, a spine of 1 Meaney, 6 Lamb, 7 Cogger, 9 Starling would be the best under 20s spine we have ever had by a long way.
The forward pack this year is really turning into something special. Young guys like Pasami Saulo, Matt Croker and Sam McIntyre are joining some good 20 year olds in Cam King, Jayden Butterfield, Zac Hosking, Eddy T and Viko P to make a formidable pack. We couldn't even find a spot for Butterfield last week, and he was probably our 3rd best last year, just behind Sam Stone and Tyrone Amey.

Interesting that Dean Kouka-Smith played for the Warriors under 20s this week.
The Warriors have 3 ex-Knights playing now - Kouka-Smith, Mat Faitotoa and Jordon Pinnock (all kiwis who played for the Knights last year).

Lowrie applauds determined win

Mon 5th June, 11:48AM

Hard work is starting to pay off for the NYC Newcastle Knights as they sit in fourth place on the ladder after four consecutive wins.

Coach Todd Lowrie admits the Round 13 clash with the Melbourne Storm on the Sunshine Coast was a close encounter that they were able to grind out.

“It was a close match,” commented Lowrie on the 27-20 scoreline.

“I felt we were in control for most of the match but the Storm didn’t let us kick away, they hung around.

“To our guys’ credit, they just did what they needed to do to win.”

Lowrie says the early part of the match tested his young side.

“We lost a couple of blokes,” he said.

“We lost Jack Johns and Eddy Tuilotolava in the first half, so we were down to 15 men about 20 minutes in, but it was a pretty good effort by the team.

“Some guys had to play a bit longer minutes than they’re used to.

“Henry Penn went on to the edge and played a bit longer than he has done in the last few weeks so it went really well.

“It was a good team performance where everyone had to dig in.”

The Under 20s coach said they also had to contend with some unfavourable conditions.

“It was a nice day to look at but we were running into a really strong wind in the first half," he added.

“It was a big effort because we then turned a corner coming into the second half and we put a few points on.”

Lowrie feels the result was well deserved.

“Our guys have been doing pretty well over the last month or so, it’s good for them,” said Lowrie.

“It is a good reward for the training they are doing.”

However, with every win, the NYC coach believes there comes a chance for improvement.

“Our ball control was a little bit down on what it has been, which is something I have been talking about for a few weeks,” explained Lowrie.

“Defence was really good but I think our ball control needed to be better.”

Next up, the young Knights take on the Manly Sea Eagles at Lottoland on Friday afternoon.

Stats are up.
Matt Cooper had most runs, most metres, most tackle breaks, scored a try and had a line break.
Cogger played 80 minutes ran 80 odd metres, had 6 tackle break and a try assist.
Eddy ran 91 metres in the first 20 minutes before going off injured.
Zac Hosking topped the tackle count with 35 - way better than the next best.

I don't watch much under 20's but are we a chance to win it all?

Must be tempting for the club to leave Cogger, Dennis, Stone & Meaney in the 20's to have a real red hot crack .....

When Starling went up to reserve grade I thought we'd struggle to win another game, because he was playing like a freak in the early rounds, but the other guys have stepped up every game, and we beat the title favourites (Penrith) fair and square without any of our stars a few weeks ago, so they are in with a shot if they keep improving.

Holden Cup Round 14 previews

The players to watch and predicted results for Round 14 of the National Youth Competition.

Sea Eagles v Knights

They might be separated by four spots on the Holden Cup ladder but this looms as one of the games of the round.

The Sea Eagles are coming off a solid win at home against the Raiders that saw three players cross for doubles while the Knights survived a second-half surge from the Storm to claim a 27-20 win on the road.

The Knights deserve favouritism, but we’ll back Tom Wright to lift Manly to victory.

Tip: Sea Eagles by 4

MATCH ANALYSIS

The season is past it's halfway mark and the NYC Newcastle Knights are travelling along nicely with a well-earned fourth place off the back of four consecutive wins.

Coach Todd Lowrie says the past six weeks have been a good period for his side.

“It has been a little stop-start, so for the boys to be able to maintain a bit of momentum, back up their performances consistently and put in some good efforts has been pleasing,” commented Lowrie.

“It's a real credit to them and their attitude at training.

“Even when we’ve had weekends off and had time away from training, they’ve been able to pick up where they left off and get the results on the field.”

With impact forward Eddy Tuilotolava out for an extended period, Pasami Saulo gets a start in the number 10 jersey.

“Eddy, who started on the weekend, hurt his knee,” explained Lowrie.

“He is unfortunately going to be out for eight weeks, which is a shame because he has been going really well but in saying that Pasami has also been doing really well so he gets the chance to start for us.

“It is a big opportunity for Pasami, he needs to try and cement a starting spot if he can.”

After a long break from injury, halfback Jack Cogger came back into the side last week and will again line up in the halves.

“He got through the whole game, he came in and said he felt alright,” stated Lowrie.

“Jack was a little bit underdone because he hadn’t played since the start of the year, but he’ll be better for the run.

“He was good defensively and did some good things with the ball in his hands so it’s good for him to get out there and play some footy.

“I will expect a little bit more of Jack this week and hopefully he can lead the team around and bring some of that experience he has from training full time and playing a bit of first grade last year.”

The Under 20s coach knows Manly is always a tough side to control.

“They are not traveling as well as us on the ladder but they’re always particularly tough when you play them at home,” Lowrie said.

“They are always really hard to beat, particularly at Lottoland.”

WHERE IT WILL BE WON

“Our guys have just got to concentrate on doing what we know works, keep improving on what we’ve been working on and hopefully we’ll be okay,” stated Lowrie.

The NYC coach believes wins come with greater ball control.

“We have got to keep holding onto the ball and get our completion rates up a little bit from what they have been,” admitted Lowrie.

“We also need to continue to work on our defensive plays and keep improving.”

Cory Denniss out (replacing Elliot in reserve grade probably) and Kyle Smith in. I don't know Smith, but google says he has been playing firstgrade for Kurri since he was 17.

Interesting that last placed Warriors had their second win of the year with Dean Kouka-Smith scoring 2 tries in his second game for them, and also another Knight from this year's roster, Keanu Dawson, had a run for them too.

looking at the stats I see Cogger only played 67 minutes - hope he was just gassed and not injured.
Nash Birch played 75 minutes and made 42 tackles at hooker. He is really taking well to the new position. As a 5/8 last year, he was a fair lump of a lad and had good defence, so always looked like he could play hooker.
