James to fight shoulder charge ban

    Mon 27 Mar, 2017, 2:00pm
    Warren Barnsley, AAP

Gold Coast co-captain Ryan James will risk a two-game NRL ban by contesting a shoulder charge citing by the match review panel.

The Titans forward could escape with a one-match ban but has pleaded not guilty to shoulder charging North Queensland's Patrick Kaufusi in the 32-26 loss on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Canberra second-rower Elliott Whitehead will miss his side's clash with Parramatta after taking an early guilty plea for tripping.

Struggling Canterbury will be without halfback Moses Mbye for Thursday's clash with Brisbane.

Mbye has opted to enter an early guilty plea over a shoulder charge on Manly's Curtis Sironen and will take a one-match sanction.

James found not guilty at judiciary

    Tue 28 Mar, 2017, 7:25pm
    Scott Bailey, AAP

Gold Coast captain Ryan James is free to play the Warriors on Sunday after being cleared of a shoulder charge by the NRL judiciary.

James was facing a two-game suspension after being cited for a first-half hit on North Queensland's Patrick Kaufusi in the Titans' 32-26 loss on Saturday.

James' left upper arm and shoulder appeared to make contact with the Cowboys' player's head in a messy three-way collision with Kaufusi and co-tackler Jarrod Wallace.

However the Titans forward argued in a 40-minute hearing on Tuesday night that he was off-balance and merely trying to protect himself from Wallace, who he collided with.

James, represented by Titans chief executive Graham Annesley, also contended the contact was minimal and that his position was natural of any player quickly preparing for an unexpected impact.

"It was consequential of the momentum of all three players involved in the tackle and it was nothing more than glancing contact," Annesley said.

Annesley's submission also argued James showed no intent of trying to make a shoulder charge, but judiciary chairman Geoff Bellew reminded the three-man panel that mattered little.

"The player is not charged with intentionally making a shoulder charge," Bellew said.

"He's charged with making it carelessly."

The counsel for the NRL, Peter McGrath, put forward that James had not tried to make a wrapping ball-and-all tackle as he had claimed, judging by the stiffness of his left arm.

"At no stage have you any intention of raising your arm at all to grab the ball player," McGrath said.

For a player to be found guilty of a shoulder charge, there must be forceful contact that is generated by the charged player, in a careless manner with no intention to use both arms.

But the judiciary panel - ex-players Sean Garlick, Mal Cochrane and Tony Puletua - ruled there was not enough evidence to suspend James on those grounds.

James would have missed one match had he pleaded guilty to the offence, but said after the hearing he immediately knew it was a worthwhile risk to fight it.

"You never go in to make a shoulder charge because you know what you're going to get," he said.

"We knew as soon as it happened that we were going to come down and fight it."

St George Illawarra Dragons lock Jack de Belin has been charged by the match review committee with a grade one dangerous contact - head/neck charge.

    Chambers facing shoulder charge ban

    Mon 10 Apr, 2017, 12:05pm
    ‌‌‌NRL.com

Melbourne centre Will Chambers could miss up to two matches after he was cited by the NRL match review committee for a shoulder charge.

Chambers was slapped with a grade one shoulder charge for his tackle on Cronulla's Wade Graham in the Storm's 11-2 loss at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon.

An early guilty plea would see Chambers miss Saturday's clash with Manly, but if he fights the charge and loses at the NRL judiciary, the Storm outside back would miss two matches.

    ‌‌‌NRL.com

Warriors second-rower Bodene Thompson has been hit with dangerous contact charge over a tackle on Aidan Sezer in Saturday's loss to the Canberra Raiders.

Thompson was charged over the 74th-minute tackle on Sezer but can avoid a suspension with an early guilty plea.

If Thompson challenges the charge at the judiciary and loses he risks a one-match ban.

Burgess found not guilty at judiciary

    Tue 18 Apr, 2017, 7:34pm
    Scott Bailey, AAP

South Sydney captain Sam Burgess has been cleared to play Brisbane on Friday night by the NRL judiciary.

Burgess had been cited with a grade-one shoulder charge on Canterbury's Greg Eastwood in the Rabbitohs' 24-9 loss on Good Friday.

However, Burgess successfully argued on Tuesday night that attacker Eastwood had generated the impact and that any contact was made with his chest, neck and jaw - not his shoulder or upper arm.

George Burgess in trouble with NRL again

    Sat 22 Apr, 2017, 1:03pm
    Scott Bailey, AAP

South Sydney forward George Burgess is facing up to four NRL games on the sideline through suspension, this time for a shoulder charge.

Burgess has been given a grade-two charge for his 63rd minute hit on Brisbane's Anthony Milford, in Friday's controversial one-point loss to the Broncos.

The Englishman can have the suspension reduced to three games if he takes an early guilty plea but will miss another four games if he elects to fight the charge at the judiciary and loses.

Regardless, either outcome will see Burgess miss England's Test with Samoa in Campbelltown on May 6.

Ironically, Milford could still turn out for the Samoans if he is cleared by Brisbane.

It's the second time Burgess has been charged this year, after he copped a two-week ban for elbowing Newcastle's Mitchell Barnett last month.

The 25-year-old was lucky to escape being cited last week against Canterbury, when he appeared to elbow Bulldogs forward Aiden Tolman in their Good Friday clash.

Burgess has endured a horror season at South Sydney.

He began the year in reserve grade for North Sydney after a disappointing Charity Shield outing against St George Illawarra, before playing in round two and being suspended in round three.

Burgess also conceded three penalties in Friday night's loss, as his disciplinary struggles in 2017 continue.

His hit on Milford, just after the five-eighth had passed the ball, marked the second time the Brisbane No.6 was floored by a Burgess brother on Friday night.

Milford was forced from the field for a concussion check after a first-half high tackle from brother Sam but says the hit from George was tougher to overcome.

"I was sweet," Milford said of the hit from Sam Burgess.

"The other one that rocked me more was from the other Burgess brother."
