boys started slow, but it's still anyones game.
Buderus has not had much ball at all. He usually calls all the shots.

Best signed for 2 years last week.
Down 10-4 at halftime. good vision by buderus to put a kick in behind the defensive line who have been jamming in all day on Best just on the stroke of halftime.

Manly coach obviously done a lot of video. Buderus needs to start calling the shots. Not the same team I've been watching. Hopefully second half we play how we usually do.

the first half from Newcastle was the worst first half of the season I think - but fairplay to Manly's coach - he had them targeting the Knights weaknesses and avoiding their strengths.

Commentary team gave Buderus MOTM, and I was just thinking he had the worst game I've seen him have since about round 2.
I thought our halves suffered from nerves and didn't get us going well, but all the other boys did about as well as usual.

Be interesting when they name NSW under 16 side later today. Best and Buderus were not named in the original train on squad, but you couldn't give Hopoate the NSW spot over Best after that game. Best is a much stronger player.

I haven't seen any of these games all year but watched the second half/extra time. There's some skill in there for sure!
That Christian Ma?? has some mongrel! Has he been that good all season Billy or did he lift today?
Good to see Best get a contract too- skillful player!
Great to see them guts it out.
The commentators mentioned that the coach played the '97 GF to them in the bus on the way to the match last week- maybe that's why they played so well in the semi! Pretty crazy you think most of these kids prob weren't even alive for the '01 final!

That was Christian's best game of the ones I've seen, but Scott Dureau said he was our best last week. The other big pacific Islander prop was good for short minutes too. He usually has bad hands, but held the ball well today.

    Knights To Remember!

The 2017 Harold Matthews Grand Final has been won in an extra-time thriller by Newcastle 26-20 against Manly at Leichhardt Oval.

The match see-sawed across the 60 minutes of regular play, with Manly holding a four-point lead into the final minute before a try in the dying seconds of regular time by Knights winger Malie-J Townsend saw the match enter extra time.

The Knights continued that momentum into the first period of extra time, with captain and lock Jaron Purcell crashing over to give his side a 24-20 lead. Max Buderus' conversion took Newcastle's lead to six.

First points of the day went to Keegan Turner, with the Sea Eagles centre darting over from dummy-half. The conversion attempt was waved away from out wide, but it was a healthy start for the Manly side.

The Sea Eagles kept coming and earned significant time in the Knights' danger zone, piling on successive sets and maintaining a high completion rate. Eventually it would result in another try, to Filimaua Filimaua-Tau in the 19th minute.

The Knights got on the board through Riley Meyn just before half time, who showed tremendous strength to cross the line.

The Sea Eagles, however responded just after the break through back-rower Joshua Schuster who slipped through some soft defence.

Newcastle, however, came surging back from 14-6 - scoring tries to Christian Ma'anaima and Meyn, who crossed for his second after Manly made an error off the back of a Max Buderus kick - to lead 16-14 midway through the second half.

But Albert Hopoate, one of the stars of the competition, had other ideas, charging through the middle of the field on an otherwise innocuous piece to play to burst into back field and score a 40-metre try. Hopoate's try and the conversion to halfback Daniel Ala took the score to 20-16.

Newcastle, however, ensured that wasn't the last scoring play of the day in their never-say-die effort that resulted in them winning the premiership.

Congratulations to all participants in the 2017 Harold Matthews competition - arguably the best of all-time.

    Knights win Harold Matthews decider

    Sat 6th May, 01:03PM

The nib Newcastle Knights Harold Matthews side came from two tries down to win a thrilling grand final 26-20 against the Manly Sea Eagles at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday afternoon.

It was a courageous display from the Under 16s side, after going through a nervy start to the showdown.

Just seconds before the final siren the young Knights were still trailing by six points, but a Patrick Achurch try right on the buzzer sent the game to extra time.

It was captain Jaron Purcell that won the game in extra time, barging over from close range to give the Knights their fourth Harold Matthews title.

"To be undefeated premiers in 2017 is an amazing feeling," Purcell said after the match.

"We have players from Newcastle, Maitland, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast, to pull a team of 16-year-old boys from country areas to win a NSW State competition is amazing.

"A special thank you to our parents and staff for the time, effort and support they put in to help us achieve our goals this season."

Max Buderus got the scoring underway for the Knights right before half time, jabbing through a grubber for back rower Riley Meyn to score.

Up until that point the Knights had been well and truly dominated by an impressive Manly side, and even though the Sea Eagles scored again early in the second half, the red and blues started building confidence.

Imposing prop Christian Ma'anaima was second try scorer for the Knights in the 36th minute, and Buderus converted to make the score 14-10 to Manly.

Soon after Meyn got his second try following an excellent run, and it looked as though the Knights had the upper hand.

But Albert Hopoate scored for Manly against the run of play with just nine minutes left on the clock, and it was clear that the Knights would have to dig deep.

Achurch came up with the most important try of the day right on full time, and the rest was history as the Knights claimed the win in extra time to complete an unbeaten 2017.
