Canberra to host 2017 ANZAC Test

Media Release, NRL

Canberra’s GIO Stadium will host the 2017 ANZAC Test between Australia and New Zealand, on Friday May 5.

The announcement was made today at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra by Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry, alongside Canberra Raiders’ representative players Shannon Boyd and Jordan Rapana, as well as NRL Ambassador Alan Tongue.

NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan said GIO Stadium would be a fitting venue for the 2017 ANZAC Test.

"The ANZAC Test is a very special match and one which is always incredibly competitive. This one will be no different," Mr Canavan said.

"Canberra fans are always passionate so it will be great for them to be able to see international Rugby League at its best.

Kangaroos Coach Mal Meninga, the former Raiders Captain and Coach, said the match would be especially significant in a World Cup year.

"It’s important to win against the Kiwis at any time but on this occasion there will be the added incentive of the World Cup," Mr Meninga said.

"The Kangaroos and I’m sure the Kiwis will be looking to put on the best performance possible to secure a win.

"It will be great to showcase Test football to Canberra."

The 2017 ANZAC Test will be billed as a double header – with the Jillaroos taking on the Kiwi Ferns prior to the Kangaroos-Kiwis blockbuster.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said Canberra had proven an ideal city to host games of this quality.

"In 2013 a sell-out crowd of almost 26,000 packed GIO Stadium where the Kangaroos beat the Kiwis 32 -12 as part of our city’s centenary celebrations," Mr Barr said.

"I have no doubt Canberrans will embrace the chance to see their heroes in action again.

"Canberra has a proud rugby league history and it was great see the city get behind the Raiders last season.

"I’m confident many of these fans will turn out in force to support the Kangaroos at GIO Stadium."

Tickets will be on sale to Raiders members at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday, February 14), followed by the General Public at 10am on Wednesday (February 15).

Tickets will be available from nrl.com/tickets

Fifita called into Kangaroos for Woods

Andrew Fifita has been called into Australia's squad for Friday's rugby league Test against New Zealand, after Aaron Woods was ruled out with injury.

Woods hobbled off Leichhardt Oval in the Wests Tigers' 22-16 loss to Fifita's Cronulla on Saturday night and was seen leaving the sheds immediately after halftime.

It's unclear how long he will be ruled out for, as the Tigers await scans on his upper leg.

Cronulla confirmed Fifita's recall, after he had originally been named for Tonga to take on Fiji in the Pacific Test, on Sunday morning.

It marks his first selection since he was excluded from last year's Four Nations for off-field matters.

However Woods may not be the only player ruled out of the clash, with Canberra prop Shannon Boyd also facing injury concerns and back-up five-eighth James Maloney likely to come under the eye of the match review committee for a high tackle.

Boyd was brought into the squad on Friday after Raiders teammate Josh Papalii was ruled out after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Boyd went off in the 25th minute of Canberra's 16-10 loss to Canterbury on Saturday night and did not return.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said Boyd had injured the back of his leg, but was unsure if it would rule him out of the Test.

"I'd have to talk to the doctor," Stuart said.

"Hopefully it doesn't for Shannon's sake - but we'll wait and see."

It's understood the injury is a different one to the foot problems that worried him in the lead-up to the Bulldogs' loss.

The Kangaroos also have Manly forward Jake Trbojevic on an extended bench, who could also come into the 17 as cover for Woods if he is the only player ruled out.

Maloney will have a nervous wait on Sunday after a high tackle on James Tedesco that left the Tigers fullback dazed.

Tedesco was taken from the field with concussion just before halftime and did not return.

Maloney was in the squad on stand by for North Queensland half Johnathan Thurston, who is unlikely to take the field after missing the past three weeks with a calf injury.

Should they both be ruled out, Michael Morgan could likely be elevated to a run-on role while Jake Friend, Mitchell Pearce, Matt Moylan and Anthony Milford could also come into contention.

Tests are good when they're an intense, close game up to the death, a lot of mid-season tests between Australia & NZ usually seem to be a blow out or bore fest unfortunately.

How keen are the players? They might like the money I guess.

Squads named, and not even taken as seriously as that cursed State of Convenience pre-game camps etc..

The England Samoa test is the big one. Everything is in samoas favour. Home advantage, half the England side are going to be jet lagged, home crowd, the new rules allow state of origin possibles like Milford, Sione and BJ to play.
All the signs are there that Samoa can get the win over a top 3 side for the first time, which will be great for the game.

Great first half from the Aussies to lead 24-0 !!

Hopefully the Kiwis can fight back in the second half and make it a contest, They certainly have the players to do it

Totally boring and uninteresting input from the nzedders.

Some of their forwards were just plain lazy ~ Proctor, Taumalolo, Blair.
