Milne, O'Brien and French charged

Mon 22 Aug, 2016, 12:14pm
NRL.com

St George-Illawarra Dragons centre Taane Milne is facing a one match ban, while Eels' forward Rory O'Brien and winger Bevan French have been cited by the NRL match review committee but will be free to play with early guilty pleas.

Milne was slapped with a grade one dangerous throw for a tackle on Roosters' forward Boyd Cordner in the 18th minute of his side's heavy 42-6 loss in Round 24 of the Telstra Premiership at Allianz Stadium.

The base penalty for the charge is just 125 points, but the Dragons centre has a loading from a similar offence as well as a non-similar offence in the past two years, meaning he will miss one match with an early plea, but would risk a two-match ban if he fights the charge at the NRL judiciary and loses.

Eels duo O'Brien (grade one dangerous contact) and French (grade one dangerous throw) will be free to play in Round 25 with early guilty pleas.

O'Brien was charged for a tackle on Raiders' winger Brenko Lee in the 23rd minute of his side's loss to Canberra, while French was cited for a tackle on Raiders captain Jarrod Croker in the 80th minute.

Burgess charged with tripping

South Sydney lock Sam Burgess has been charged with tripping, the only player to attract the attention of the NRL match review committee from the Rabbitohs' victory over the Bulldogs on Friday night.

Burgess was cited for an incident involving Canterbury prop Aiden Tolman in the 47th minute of the contest, and a poor previous record means an early guilty plea would still result in a one-match ban, to be served in 2017.

Wighton headed for NRL judiciary

Mon 05 Sep, 2016, 4:59pm
NRL.com

Raiders fullback Jack Wighton will head to the NRL judiciary on Tuesday night, after the club announced he will plead not guilty to a shoulder charge that threatens to end his season on the eve of Canberra's return to the finals.

Wighton was cited for a grade two shoulder charge for an incident involving Wests Tigers forward Joel Edwards, with two prior offences in the past two years adding significant loading to the 350-point base penalty for the charge.

If Wighton is successful in challenging the charge and is found not guilty on Tuesday night, he will be free to take his place at GIO Stadium on Saturday in his side's qualifying final against the Sharks.

If found guilty, Wighton will be banned for four matches and won't play again until 2017.

Big difference, no matches and 4? Will be interesting to see which way it goes. Does common sense prevail at the judiciary this week

Well if that's the case it seems shoulder charges are back in.

True. I didn't see the Michael Ennis one, but Wighton did a classic shoulder charge by definition, so why is he free from suspension? Shoulder charges aren't a suspension anymore or something? What is wrong with the judiciary this year.

The argument was by definition funnily enough

The NRL said that for it to be defined as a shoulder charge " The upper arm of the defender must be tucked in to his side at contract"

The defence used still shots to show separation between Wightons arm and side at the point of contact (Which was the forearms of the 2 players) therefore technically it's not a shoulder charge

The judiciary is so gullible. Separation in still shots. Yeah that's because he was forcefully pushing using the shoulder and arms. Hence why joely went flying as opposed to a traditional shoulder charge where he would just take flight and land on his ***.

If you play for the Knights however, you'd be looking at 5-6 weeks on the sideline...

Roberts faces semi-final suspension

Broncos centre Jams Roberts is in danger of missing his side's semi-final clash in the second week of the 2016 NRL Telstra Premiership Finals Series, charged for contrary conduct in his side's win over the Titans on Friday night.

Roberts was cited for an incident involving Ryan Simpkins in the 51st minute of the contest, and with one similar offence in the past two seasons adding 50 per cent loading to the charge, an early guilty plea would still result in a one-match ban.

Broncos to challenge Roberts charge

NRL.com

The Brisbane Broncos will challenge the contrary conduct charge against centre James Roberts at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night.

Roberts was charged after appearing to kick the back of Titans forward Ryan Simpkins during Friday night's elimination final at Suncorp Stadium.

Roberts would have been suspended for one match had he entered an early guilty plea to the charge, and risks a one-match ban if found guilty at the judiciary.

Gillett charged for Thurston trip

NRL.com

Broncos back-rower Matt Gillett has been cited for tripping, the only player charged by the NRL match review committee in Brisbane's semi-final loss to North Queensland.

Gillett's 78th minute trip on Cowboys halfback Johnathan Thurston allowed the No.7 to kick a crucial penalty goal which levelled the scores at 20-all, but a previous good record means the Queensland forward will avoid suspension.
