Pretty shameful that we lose against bottom teams but win against top teams.

NYC Knights blown away by Dragons

    Sun 2nd August, 01:47PM

The NYC Newcastle Knights lost 48-18 to the St George Illawarra Dragons at Jubilee Oval on Sunday afternoon.

While the young Dragons sit in last place on the NYC ladder, they still blew away a Knights side looking to cement a spot in the top-eight thanks to their tricky outside backs.

With hooker Danny Levi and halfback Jack Cogger returning to the side, the Knights would have been confident of grabbing a win.

Instead it only took the Dragons six minutes to score when their right edge combined to make a brilliant play that was finished off by Izaac Thompson.

Ryan James converted, and four minutes later the Knights were exposed on their left side again when halfback Jack Payne placed a bomb across the field that winger Tom Carr easily collected to score.

With the score 12-0, the Knights suddenly clicked into gear, Brock Lamb playing Luke Yates through a hole for the burly lock to run 20 meters and drag three defenders over the line.

Lamb converted to halve the home side's lead, but soon after the Dragons grabbed another when hooker Ryan Fletcher forced his way over from dummy-half.

The Knights were close to scoring their second in the 25th minute when Yates again broke through the line, but his pass to Jacob Gagai proved too hard for the young centre to get a hold of.

Four minutes later the Dragons were over again when Carr grabbed his second with a 20 metre run down the touchline.

Carr made it a hat-trick three minutes later when he again found space down the right edge and Thompson converted to push the half-time score to 30-6.

The young Knights started the second half with renewed energy as Cogger dived over the line.

Video replays showed that he had been held up over the line though, and from there on in the Knights struggled to gain any sort of control.

In the 57th minute Jay Gallagher crashed over for the Dragons and then two minutes later Adam Clune pushed the score to 42-6 with a clever try.

The Knights bounced back via Josh King when the big prop scored in the 69th minute, but then five minutes later the Dragons scored again via halfback Payne.

Seconds before full-time Jacob Gagai grabbed a try back for the red and blues, but the final score was still a heavy 48-18.

    SUMMARY

Dragons - 48 (Thompson, Fletcher, Carr 3, Clune, Gallagher, Payne; G: James 8/8)

    Knights - 18 (T: Yates, King, Gagai; G: Lamb 3/3)

While the NYC Newcastle Knights looked to be back to full strength on Sunday, the team was unable to contain the St George Illawarra Dragons who fought hard to lift from bottom of the competition ladder.

NYC Coach Troy Pezet said their opposition came out firing at Jubilee Oval, which put the young Knights onto the back foot right from the outset.

“We just got off to a really bad start, then it took its toll on us and we couldn’t find the energy,” he said.

“We just got too far back and couldn’t get forward."

The boost provided by Danny Levi, who has played up in the NRL for the past five rounds, proved to be a double-edged sword for the team.

“With Danny coming back maybe the boys just thought, he’ll make it happen today," he said.

“On the other hand that knocks your continuity around that we’ve had in the last couple of weeks and we probably just didn’t sort it out very well on the edges."

Top performers for Pezet were in the side's back line, as well as the halves who were solid.

“As usual, I thought Kenny (Tofilau) and Mao (Uta) brought a heaps of energy and they tried really hard,” he said.

“Brock (Lamb) fought hard and didn’t give in and he was still chasing until the end and Bryce Donovan, he gave plenty of energy as well.”

Approaching the pointy end of the competition, Pezet says the Under 20s Knights must switch on and make the most of preparation for the Sydney Roosters on Sunday.

"It’s important with five rounds to go that we concentrate now on our recovery leading into next week and just try to tidy up some areas,” Pezet said.

"We are young and we are supposed to be enthusiastic and that’s a part of where we let ourselves down."

Jack Cogger returned for his first game back in five weeks after recovering from an ankle injury to re-establish his partnership with Lamb in the halves.

“It was a bit hard, especially with that score line…but it was good to finally be back,” Cogger after the game.

The Australian Schoolboys representative thought the biggest battle the side faced on the field was against themselves.

“We wanted to keep turning up and each time they scored and we though, 'yes, we’ll fix something', but we just couldn’t get it done today," he added.

“The more we tried the harder it got.

“We probably had our strongest team on the park for a while.

“It didn’t show obviously, but it was good to get everyone back together so we could start to get those combinations back together and win a few games at least.

“We will re-group after this week and will have another good week at training."

With the semi finals looming and the Knights determined to remain in the mix, this Sunday’s game at Hunter Stadium holds plenty of importance.

“We come back at home Sunday…hopefully we can get a win coming into the semis,” Cogger concluded.

I haven't watched a lot of NYC this year, but if this was the only game i'd seen i'd reckon Lamb was the only decent player in the side, and maybe Donovan.
But i've seen other games like the one against the Warriors where they dominated a good side and everyone played well.

    funny team.

Only a 3 team comp this year, the rest are making up the numbers. When the team coming 4th at the time gets belted by a combined 110 odd points in 2 weeks you know there isn't much competition below the top 3.

Yates is either injured, or 18th man for firstgrade.
Probably injured. He missed a game after the under 20s SOO game and his numbers have been down a lot since he came back.

    Match Analysis:

It was simply a flat week for the NYC Newcastle Knights according to coach Troy Pezet when looking back on last weekend’s defeat by the St George Illawarra Dragons.

That’s why the young Knights refuse to dwell on the loss, and instead plan to re-gather and unite as the team approaches the fourth placed Sydney Roosters on Sunday at Hunter Stadium.

“They have been up for a couple of weeks and are disappointed in their efforts and probably didn’t see it coming,” Pezet said of last week.

“We have had a good week at training and have put it behind us with five weeks to go.

“We are just excited and ready to make amends this week."

While facing the Roosters the first time this season, the Knights have kept an eye on the side throughout the year and are confident in their ability to identify and disarm the opposition’s threats.

“We have followed them in a couple of games in previews and have seen a little bit of what they have,” he said.

“Latrell Mitchell is going to be one to watch at fullback. He’s a really good player.

“For us we just need to improve on our key areas and that means being better defensively.

Pezet believes the Knights’ attitude in defence needs to be on point this weekend.

“We know that we can score points and have a pretty good team and when we’re confident, we can hold our own with anyone as we have shown at different times throughout the year,” he said.

“It’s just our concentration and work ethic in defence that needs to improve this week.

The Knights boast additional stability in the halves with Jack Cogger re-igniting his partnership with Brock Lamb after a recent return from injury.

“We are looking to Jack and Brock to be tidy in the way they finish our sets and I think we’ll go okay,” he said.

Bryce Donovan, Fuaimamao Uta and Ken Tofilau have also been forces to reckon with in the Knights’ back line.

“They are providing really good starts to our sets,” he added.

In the past two weeks the Knights have played on the road - Pezet acknowledges the side hasn’t performed as well as we would have liked - but embraces the chance to return to the home ground.

“We are looking forward to getting back home and have plenty to play for sitting on the edge of the eight,” he said.

“We need to keep winning if we are going to stay in touch.”

Where it will be won: Set completion

“The key this week lies in our ability to finish our sets, that’s really important,” Pezet said.

“I think our back three will be tidy and will get us off to a good start, and then we will be looking for the halves to finish it.

“The rest of the game will look after itself.”

NYC Knights lose late to Roosters

    Sun 9th August, 03:20PM

The NYC Newcastle Knights were beaten 30-22 by the Sydney Roosters at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon, conceding two tries in the final three minutes to relinquish their well-earned lead.

Considering their subpar outing last week against NYC cellar-dwellers the Dragons, this performance against the fourth-placed Roosters was full of courage in defence and composure in attack.

Unfortunately for the young red and blues though, they were unable to maintain defensive composure late in the game and capitalise on so much good work.

The Knights scored first points in the eighth minute when Brock Lamb made a clever pass for Bradie Smith to break through the line and dive over.

Lamb added the extras, but from there on in the Roosters applied plenty of attacking pressure with repeat sets from line drop-outs.

The prolonged defence from the Knights on their own line finally showed in the 21st minute when Richard Skelton stormed over.

Latrell Mitchell's attempted conversion went wide, but in the following set the Roosters scored again when Joey Lussick finished off a break through the middle.

Mitchell made no mistakes with his conversion this time, pushing the score to 10-6.

The young Knights built up some pressure of their own via a repeat set five minutes later, and soon after lock Luke Yates was put through a hole to score.

Lamb again converted to put his side back in the lead.

Seconds before half-time a penalty to the Knights 40 metres out saw Lamb go for goal, but his kick went wide to leave the score at 12-10 when the siren sounded.

The Knights pushed themselves further in front six minutes into the second half when Fuaimamao Uta played Ken Tofialu through to score an easy try in the left corner.

Lamb again did well to convert from out wide, but seven minutes later the Roosters struck back when winger Charlie Taylor evaded his marker to score.

Mitchell converted to push the score to 18-16, but it didn't take the Knights long to fight back after that.

Fullback Bryce Donovan stripped the ball from Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck on a kick return three minutes later to race twenty metres and score, and Lamb continued his impressive kicking record with another conversion to restore his side's eight point lead.

The Roosters pegged that back to two points again in the 61st minute when Skelton grabbed his second try thanks to some slack defending, and Latrell converted from straight in front.

Seven minutes later Donovan looked to have made a big error when he dropped the ball from dummy-half on his own line, but in the following defensive set debutant winger Matt Soperlawler came up with a massive hit to win his side back possession.

Unfortunately for the Knights with three minutes remaining the Roosters proved unstoppable, fullback Mitchell breaking through the line 50 metres out to score in the left corner. Soon after Skelton completed his hat-trick to seal his side a very late win.

    SUMMARY

    Sydney Roosters 32 (T: Lussick, Skelton 3, Taylor, Mitchell ; G: Mitchell 4/6)
Newcastle Knights 24 (T: Bradie, Yates, Tofilau, Donovan; G: Lamb 4/4
