Official: Trent Hodkinson signs with the Sharks

We won't get more than 200k for Hodko unless he gets another offer.
If Manly are the only one's interested, they can give us as little as they like.
Yeah lol at the moment he isn't even getting a spot in the halves for reserve grade, crazy how things change.

Trent Hodkinson has ‘plenty of good footy left in him’ as talks with Manly continue

TRENT Hodkinson’s so-called dodgy knee is not the health risk everyone is making it out to be, and the former NSW Origin-winning halfback feels he has “plenty of good footy left in him”.

That is the view of Hodkinson’s agent and former top-grade player David Riolo, who has defended one of the NRL’s good guys amid injury “misinformation”.

Riolo plans to continue talks with Manly coach Trent Barrett today to see if they can strike a deal for the out-of-favour Newcastle playmaker and reunite him with the club which gave him his start.

Although Hodkinson has a year to run on his Knights contract, Mitchell Pearce’s arrival means he must find a new club to have another crack in the NRL.

For that to happen, Hodkinson would need Newcastle to carry a significant whack of his lucrative $800,000-plus contract for next year.

There is even talk that if Hodkinson stays at the Knights he might play off the bench in NSW Cup because of competition in the halves from Pearce, Connor Watson, Brock Lamb and Jack Cogger.

Barrett is interested in Hodkinson as a possible partner for Daly Cherry-Evans following the departure of Blake Green.

Barrett also has a rap on recruit Lachlan Croker, although the 20-year-old only has limited NRL experience with Canberra.

It would be a big risk for Manly to go into the new season without an experienced halves partner to take pressure off Cherry-Evans.

While Hodkinson’s knee problems also cast doubt over his worth, Riolo is adamant his issues can be managed.

“When he is my age (45) he is going to be a shot duck but so am I, so are most of my mates,” Riolo said.

“That is the nature of a contact sport.

“It doesn’t leave your body in good shape in later life.

“But there has been a lot of misinformation (about his knees). His health is fine.

“You could check the stats but I don’t think he has missed a game in the last three years through his knee.

“He didn’t get picked a couple of times last year, he got dropped. But it wasn’t his knee.”

Riolo said Newcastle coach Nathan Brown had been supportive of Hodkinson’s situation.

However, that doesn’t make it any easier for a man who has conducted himself honourably on and off the field throughout his career.

“Trent just gets on with it and does what he is supposed to do but it is not an ideal situation, is it?” Riolo said.

“But that is modern-day football.

“You can either sulk or you can get on with it and Trent is a very positive person and he just gets on with it.

“He definitely feels that he has plenty of good footy left in him.

“Trent would be a great acquisition for Manly.

“I would like to see that happen. But it is not at that stage yet.

“I will talk to Manly tomorrow and see where they are at.”

I watched Trent in an early home game last season he was standing at marker (right in front of me ) he took a step sideways and almost went down , he limped for three sets and missed a tackle because he couldn't move sideways they scored and we lost the game ...His knee is shot ...
Also Pythian said last week that its boring when you cant train with the team but at least he has Hodko there with him , so Hodko doesn't train with the team either. That says everything about his knee imo . Roilo your full of sxxx...

No his knee is fine and manly should hurry up and sign him lol

Can't understand why Hodko, if knee is a problem, would go looking to play elsewhere, surely he gets his 800k if he sticks with us, virtually doesn't play, train as easy as can, get the knee as good as can then end of 2018 reassesses and signs up with EPL.
Don't get me wrong am happy for him to move on he is not a part of our next 3-4 year plan, just hard to understand.

In fairness Frank, it is obvious that he's not all about the money...he is a professional football player, and while we think he's not in our plans, doesn't mean he still doesn't have plans of his own.

I respect that he wants to earn his pay packet and still wants to maintain a career, while ever he can, at the elite level...I was expecting him to be looking to ESL next year anyway to try and extend his playing career.

Its crazy to think we signed him up on 800k to only watch him pass a ball from first receiver, it would take me a lifetime to earn that money lol, I believe that in soccer overseas if you underperform they just transfer you or tear up your contract wish that was in nrl. Anyways happy with all our new recruits this year they all seem keen to prove at nrl level.

His stock is going down by the year. Right now he's being considered by Manly as a desperation buy to fill in for 1 year on the cheap. And even then they don't seem 100% sold yet. He's basically at the level of a Jeff Robson now, a guy that 1 or 2 desperate clubs might take a punt on for a year as experience. Another year in reserve grade & he won't get a deal anywhere. Besides, as a first-grade footballer, he'll have aspirations to play first-grade, nobody of his standing wants to potentially play off the bench in reserve grade.

I have zero issue with him sticking round, we signed him our fault.

Medical person that signed off on him should be strung up on the nearest tree though.

We're fine salary cap wise, still literally a million dollars to make up. If we were in some trouble with overpaid players bumping our cap over the limit, I guarantee we'd be a bit more urgent though.

3rd party breaches by the sounds. So i assume they will have to include this in their cap now? which would mean they wont be able to sign any more players?

The news just said that not only wont Manly be able to buy Hodkinson they may have to get rid of a couple of players .

Manly have 800k to spend but it sounds like they will lose 400k for next season.if thats the case They may be left with hodkinson as their only real option.

Yes hodginson is a top bloke, but I'd rather have Brock lamb here for the future..hope manly can scrape together 10cents we'll chip in the rest
