Knights Salary Cap

Yep. The signing of particularly Boyd was nothing short of a joke, the team was weaker for having him there in place of Gidley.

While Gidley was never blessed with the marquee-quality talent of many other players, he showed that hard work and never giving up could be as equally valuable.
The best footy I recall him playing was at the back or off the bench, not in the halves where he was forced to go.

Every club Bennett left was in worse shape roster-wise, without consideration of long-term development or recruitment strategies. All of the following coaches suffered for it and felt the axe shortly after.
Brisbane was luckier than the Dragons and Knights in the fact they maintained enough experienced and talented players to be competitive when he first left.

No salary cap helps the Broncs too Wobbles

i.e. Lockyer
But considering even if Bennett does decide to step down from coaching the Broncos I think he will likely leave them in better shape then he did with the other teams.

Got me thinking though with that and even to an extent with Des, if you make/win a GF or two during your time there even though you've left their situation in shambles, would you care as a coach? You can still say you achieved what you did and got paid to do it.
Manly have kind of moved on from that right now but the Bulldogs have spent 70% of their cap on forwards and don't have much going for them in the spine department...but hey at least Des said he made 2 GFs with that team.

I think that makes Des' time at the Bulldogs an even bigger failure, their whole roster & salary cap got stuffed, they endured multiple years of mind numbing football towards the back end there & they couldn't even say they won a premiership for their troubles. I'm a believer in if you win a premiership, then all the pain surrounding it is worth it, but all they have is a few runners up, it was all for nothing.

On top of the cap and front office, including coach dogs were spending $20 million as well.

Hasler is the biggest myth ever. Ran the dogs into the ground.

Though 5 years of watching props at 1st receiver on the 5th tackle did have its merits.

Yeah it amazes me more people dont see it that way. How many players actually improved during his time there? You can't say many did. Mbye for example didn't. Lichaa didn't. Josh Reynolds was so so. The guy relied on the already established players like Morris', Ennis, Hodkinson, as well as the guys bought in during that time but you can't exactly say the team was left in better shape or improved during his time there. And now they've bought in Foran who was reportedly cancerous during his time at the Warriors according to officials there.
You can say he built Manly to an extent but even still leaving the roster the way he did raises a few eyebrows.

But at least he can say he made 2 GFs there ;)

It is what it is, coaches live and die by their results. If they have to short cut players development in favor of bringing in someone from the outside to ensure they keep their position they will do just that.

Then when it turns bad the coach is punted and the club is left without the development they needed.

Take us, Brown brought in to take us from rock bottom as a club, so he was given the time to make the changes and develop our squad without pressure. Coaches generally are not afforded that free time, so have to make their impact quickly. We now have Brown with a very promising few halves but we chased Cronk, we chased Maloney, we are chasing Pearce. Those signings are about getting results now! And if we lose Lamb, or Cogger now, will so be it. It's a short term focus of a coach vs long term vision of a club.

Coaches are like politicians trying to get re-elected after a short contract. Clubs take a longer term outlook. Neither is really compatible with the other view. The trick is to get a good coach, sign them for a long term, or without actually signing a long term contract tell them they have a long term to develop the club, and let them do it.

It's funny how often in this forum we have complained about how much individual players are overpaid and now we are complaining about the problems of being too far under the cap with possible fines to be incurred. We sign the same amount of players, give or take, all being equal then costs should be similar unless we have signed poorer players for less or are paying less than should for good players. Then we complain that someone is paid too much to play wing because they are paid as a centre or fullback. Isn't it better to overpay someone to play wing than have them overpaid to play reserves. If it's best for the team then let's go for it.
