2017 NYC Holden Cup

NYC Knights stun table-topping Panthers

Sun 21st May, 11:30AM

The NYC Newcastle Knights defeated the top of the table Penrith Panthers 28-22 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday morning for their third consecutive win before the bye.

The Knights showed a precision kicking game to lead by two points in the first half and were just able to hold off the Panthers in the second stanza thanks to a determined try from fullback Matt Cooper in the dying minutes.

Three minutes in, captain Wayde Egan put the first points on the board for the visitors before Knights hooker Nash Birch dived through a wall of defence on the line for Newcastle’s first. The scores were levelled at 6-6.

In the 20th minute, Penrith winger Brain Too made a dash down the right side and crossed over for the try, then with five minutes to go in the first half, Hayden Loughrey shrugged off a tackle to slide over for the Knights' second.

The Knights led 12-10 into the break.

At the 45-minute mark, Knights winger Kainoa Gudgeon went down the right side to place the ball over in the corner before fellow winger Mitch Andrews put another try on the board. The Knights led 22-10.

An impressive intercept by Gudgeon saw a dash down field with the help of Heath Gibbs before Panthers Jarome Luai was sent to the bin for dissent.

Although a man down, it didn’t deter the visitors as their skipper crossed over for a double in the 63rd minute and back from the bin, Panthers’ Luai found the line for the try down the middle. Blore successfully converted to level the scores 22-22.

With two minutes on the clock, Loughrey broke free to make a sprint down field as he off-loaded to Cooper to finish it off. Gudgeon nailed the conversion to seal the win for the Knights 28-22.

That's a huge win without Starling, Cogger, Denniss and Croker.
Lowrie is turning into a really good coach. His players improve over the season really well.

We are up to 5th.
we are starting to look like a contender this year.
The sides who have beaten us are sitting 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th, and in recent weeks we have avenged two of those loses by beating Penrith and the Titans.

Stats are up.
The only stats that stand out are Big Eddy did 20 runs for 176 metres, and Pasami Saulo had 15 runs for 168 metres, which I think is a career high for the 18 year old in NYC.

Round 1 – New Zealand Warriors 10-48 Newcastle Knights

It was a perfect start to 2017 for the young Knights, as they blew a big and physical Warriors side out of the water.

Halfback Hayden Loughrey starred in his NYC debut, scoring two tries and earning the Players’ Player award.

Five-eighth Jack Johns was also impressive in his first outing as a Knight.

Scorers: Cooper 2, Loughrey 2, Kouka-Smith, Starling, Johns, Musgrove, Saulo, Gudgeon.

Round 2 – Newcastle Knights 40-44 Gold Coast Titans

The red and blues again scored more than 40 points, but it wasn’t enough against an enterprising Titans side.

Despite the final score line here was plenty of effort from the Knights as they clawed their way back from a 34-6 deficit at half time.

Matt Cooper continued to cement his place as the team’s lock-in fullback, taking his try tally to three in two games.

Scorers: Tuilotolava, Hosking, King, Johns, Cooper, Dark, Gudgeon.

Round 3 – Newcastle Knights 26-22 South Sydney Rabbitohs

Again there was just four points in the game, but this time it was the Knights who came away with the win.

The young red and blues showed plenty of grit, overturning a 12-point half time deficit with Jack Johns and fullback Cooper pulling the strings.

Scorers: Kouka-Smith 2, Johns, Cooper, King.

Round 4 – Penrith Panthers 40-16 Newcastle Knights

This was a game to forget for the Knights, as they came up against reigning premiers the Panthers.

At half time the Knights were on the wrong end of a 22-0 score line, but managed to pull back three tries in the second stanza.

Scorers: Gibbs, Loughrey, Andrews.

Round 5 – Cronulla Sharks 32-22 Newcastle Knights

The Under 20s had another away game in Round 5, and it was against a formidable Sharks side that now sits on the top of the ladder.

At half time the Novocastrians were just six points behind, but in the end the Sharks pulled away despite an impressive stint from Knights prop Cameron King.

Cooper again scored two tries, pushing his tally to six in five games.

Scorers: Cooper 2, King, Birch.

Round 6 – Newcastle Knights 22-12 Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

The young red and blues got back in the winner’s circle in Round 6 thanks to a strong defensive performance.

The Knights were brilliant in the first half, rushing out to an 18-point lead, and then shut up shop in the final forty to start climbing back up the ladder.

Scorers: Gibbs 2, Starling, Andrews.

Round 7 – Newcastle Knights 22-20 Sydney Roosters

This match was one of the side’s most impressive win’s to date this season, as the Knights scored two tries in the final ten minutes to come back from the dead.

It was Josh Ralph’s first appearance for the Club as he came back from pre-season surgery with a bang, but coach Todd Lowrie would have been most impressed with the scrambling defence by the red and blues in the final minute that ultimately secured the two points.

Scorers: Andrews, Ralph, Gibbs, Loughrey.

Round 8 – North Queensland Cowboys 54-12 Newcastle Knights

The young Knights came crashing back to earth in Round 8, as they were blown off the park by an outstanding Cowboys side.

The game was already over at half time as the home side led 32-6, and there was plenty of soul-searching in the sheds after the game.

The Novocastrians clearly found some answers though, as they went on to win their next three straight against some pretty impressive opposition.

Scorers: Cooper, Johns.

Round 9 - Gold Coast Titans 22 - 50 Newcastle Knights

Although the final score doesn’t show it, this match was very tight up until half time.

The score was 16-all at the break, but the Knights found an extra gear in the second half as they piled on a staggering 34 points.

Back rower Sam McIntyre had his most impressive game to date, while SG Ball graduate Pasami Saulo also scored two tries.

Scorers: McIntyre 2, Saulo 2, Cooper, Andrews, Tuilotolava, Loughrey, Gudgeon.

Round 10 – Newcastle Knights 32-6 Canberra Raiders

Arguably the team’s most complete performance of 2017, the Knights came back home in Round 10 to restrict the Raiders to just the one try.

Ralph was at his attacking best as he picked up two tries and was also named Players’ Player.

Heath Gibbs also had one of his better games out in the centres, where he grabbed a try and provided plenty of attacking threat.

Scorers: Ralph 2, Gibbs, Hosking, McIntyre, Gudgeon.

Round 11 – Newcastle Knights 28-22 Penrith Panthers

This is the game where the Under 20s demonstrated how far they’ve come since the early rounds, knocking off the Panthers who were sitting on a nine game unbeaten streak.

Every player performed near their best, and the icing on the cake came in the dying minutes when Cooper finished off a 50 metre play to secure the win.

Eddy Tuilotolava was named Players’ Player thanks to a powerhouse performance from the bench, while Loughrey’s kicking game kept the Panthers stranded up their own end for large portions of the first half.

The win also provided the young Knights with the perfect springboard to push on in the second half of the season.

Scorers: Birch, Loughrey, Gibbs, Andrews, Cooper.

The best part is we have guys getting better every week.
A lot of these guys - Tom Starling, Sam McIntyre, Matt Cooper, Kurtis Dark, Heath Gibbs, Pasami Saulo, Mitch Andrews, Nash Birch, Matt Croker - are all 18/19, so have 1 or 2 more years in NYC, and all those guys are getting better week by week I think. I'm not sure of the age of Loughrey and a few others, so we might even have more young guys.

Jack Johns will have to get tackling lessons from his grandfather - who was the best defensive second rower in the real NRL i'm told.

MATCH ANALYSIS

NYC Newcastle Knights coach Todd Lowrie is fielding a near unchanged side against the Melbourne Storm this weekend, with the exception of big man Eddy Tuilotolava, who gets to start in the number ten jersey.

“Eddy went really well for us last week and picked up man of the match and Players’ Player,” explained Lowrie.

“He has been doing things well for a few weeks so he gets his chance to jump into the starting side.

“We had a few little changes here and there, that was mainly dictated from some guys that became available from above but generally most of our team has been pretty settled for the last month or two.

“It helps the guys form combinations and we’re really seeing that by some of the performances we are putting in.”

With the Storm Under 20s hosting the match on the Sunshine Coast, the Knights will have a bit of travelling to do before Saturday.

“The boys generally travel okay, they only had one mishap this year but I think it is a good opportunity to get away together,” explained Lowrie.

“It is only a short hour flight up there then another hour on the bus to the Sunshine Coast... it will be good to get up there this time of the year.”

Fourth on the ladder and three wins on the trot, the Knights are building momentum for a good back end of the season.

“The key in the Under 20s is being able to string a few wins together in a row, that’s what we’ve been able to do over the last month,” the NYC coach said.

“Generally if you can do that, you rocket up the table a little bit.

“There is still a lot of areas identified that they want to keep working on which is really good.”

While the Storm have only won one from their last eight matches, Lowrie saya they’ll still be effective around the park.

“Although they are based on the Sunshine Coast, they still do operate as a typical Melbourne Storm type of team,” commented Lowrie.

“They will be really good around the ruck but that is an area we’ve identified where we need to be better at so it’ll be a good test for us.

“They have got some big guys through the middle and some really good halves, pretty much all over the field.

“Although, we do have some blokes like Hayden Loughrey, he’s a natural fullback and is quite good at his supporting roles.

“We also have a lot of guys who are quite nifty around the ruck and we’ve scored a few long range tries this year.”

WHERE IT WILL BE WON

“Defence is the area we need to keep improving on,” said Lowrie.

“Our attack is generally going pretty well so that is the area the boys have really identified they need to keep working on.

“Their control around the ruck and edge defence has been really good lately and off-loads will definitely hurt us against Melbourne if we don’t control it.”

The middle forwards is the area where we are improving rapidly. Not long ago we had Hosking and Butterfield injured and Saulo seemed to be below his form of last year, so we looked a bit weak in the middle forwards, but now we have big Eddy, Cam King, Hosking, Saulo, Butterfield and Matt Croker all in great form and smashing out great metres. Zac Hosking is the guy who doesn't get enough credit. He gets through a mountain of work and holds it all together while the big guys, Eddy and Cam, have the big impact.

Knights won 27-20.
Denniss, Cogger and Croker came into the team to replace Musgrove, Ralph and Butterfield.
