Time will tell 88, maybe the salary cap comes in low and our squad looks completely different in 2018, maybe it looks almost the same with not much quality added. Regardless, Brownie has more motivation that all of us to get it right, because if we suck again he's not getting a new deal.

We got BK, it took a $500k deal back when the salary cap was less than $3.5m. Works out to be a $1.35m if the salary cap is $9m.

Another thing that is working against Browny at the moment as well is he made a 2 game rookie the richest teen in NRL history.
It won't sit well with established players looking to sign here knowing a rookie would be probably earning more than him.

I think the NRL should release how much money each club uses in 3rd party deals, the fans should have a right to know how unfair the NRL salary cap system is, after all, the public are the ones who make the NRL money!!!
There was an article a couple of years ago about how much each club spends on TPA's, from memory the Broncos and Bulldogs were both $2 million+ while the Knights were at 200-300k. Really that's 2-3 world class players difference between the good sides and the poor sides.

Looking at replacements for Gagai what about Taane Milne from Dragons ? He's obviously looking to move since he is stuck behind Aitken and Lafai and I'm guessing wouldn't have to pay too much ?
That would be a great signing

There is no Newcastle way. The way to win a premiership is to have good players, not the most locals. The reason we haven't often bought marquees in our history is because we have a constant supply of juniors & are geologically unnattractive to anyone outside of Newcastle.

There is no one left to sign thats going to help us avoid a 4th spoon... we gain ponga and lose dane...

Our halfback is in reggies...

Not looking good... Johns was right when he said its going to take 8 - 10 years...

The Sharks had one local in their GF winning side last year.
They found a way to build a culture where players were playing for more than money.
Melbourne have managed that too.
Every other side that wins a premiership manage it as well, but 9 out of 10 of them do it by getting players who grew up supporting the side - not buying mercenaries who are playing for money.
It isn't hard - you can't buy a premiership - you have to earn a premiership by building a culture of players who want to win for much more than dollars.
If you have a way to do that that doesn't involve growing our own, you should share it, because every coach and administrator in the game wants to know.

That's the whole point lol you have explained the 'Newcastle way' right after saying there is no Newcastle way lol .....

Can you name me a time we had a good side full of big name recruits ? Even the Bennett side had a lot of locals. I don't have anything against signing imports and I actually think Brown's idea to clear cap room and go after these guys was in theory a good idea, but as we have seen marquee players don't want to come here especially when we're coming last ......

Lol at needing players that supported the side growing up to be able to win a premiership.
Biggest load of cow manure I have ever read on these forums.

How so?

What about all the players around Hayne?
SBW when he was here.
Melbournes big 4 ect.

It's an unspoken rule you don't discuss salaries with each other, read that plenty of times over the years.

Err Ponga was a 2 game rookie when he signed the richest deal by a teen ever in the NRL.
I'm pretty sure Hayne and SBW signed their big contracts after more than 2 games LOL
