DANE’S NEWCASTLE DEADLINE

Newcastle centre Dane Gagai has until June 30 to take up an option for another season at the Knights.

With several clubs interested in the Queensland Origin winger, Gagai is exploring his options on the open market.

While the 26-year-old has another two months before deciding whether to trigger another year in his deal, it’s understood both the club and his management are comfortable renegotiating a deal if he decides to let his option pass.

What’s interesting about the option is — it’s quite lucrative, worth around $600,000.

The Dragons have expressed interest in Gagai with Josh Dugan no certainty to re-sign.

He offers a utility value due to his ability to play centre and fullback.

Gagai has been linked with Cronulla who are looking for a replacement for Jack Bird but it’s understood while the Sharks rate Gagai and have some level of interest, they’ve baulked at his asking price.

Brown’s word on recruitment

Wed 26th April, 09:00AM

The spotlight is on recruitment at the nib Newcastle Knights as the Club continues to build a squad for the long term.

Coach Nathan Brown maintains while there’s no immediate news, anything is possible.

“We are certainly in a strong financial position, whether something falls or not before June 30, I’m not too sure but we’ve just got to be patient to make sure we get the right people,” explained Brown.

“A couple of main targets, we got Kalyn (Ponga), we missed Jack (Bird). Matt Scott would have been someone we would have loved to get, he stayed at the Cowboys and Dale Finucane was someone we would have loved to get but he stayed at the Storm.

“They are good players that are staying at very strong Clubs or going to very strong Clubs, so we really want to make sure that we get players that take us into the next decade.

“The Club has gone through a lot, the fans have gone through a lot, the last thing we want to do is to react just because we’ve missed player X and pay a lot of money for someone who is not going to take the Club forward.

“The town deserves a good team.”

The Club continues to work with centre Dane Gagai in a bid to keep him in Newcastle.

“He is someone we’d love to stay; I know he is keen to stay and over time I am sure things will work out one way or another," Brown said.

“I know Gags is happy here and his family is happy here, we’ll just have to wait and see but there is no time frame, these things always work themselves out.

“I couldn’t sit here and guarantee that he will do one thing or another but I know he does like Newcastle, he understands what it is all about and his partner and young one are happy, his mum and dad are here, his brother is here, he’s very happy here.

“At the end of the day the weight of money can get anyone, you just don’t know what some Clubs have to spend, where they get it from and how much they are willing to spend in certain positions.

“From our point of view we’d love Gags to stay and I know he is more keen on the idea of staying so we’d have to say we’re definitely in with a decent chance anyway.”

The Knights coach said at this time the Club is being linked to a lot of players, including the likes of Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldog James Graham.

“Because where we are financially in the cap situation, probably a lot better off than more Clubs at the moment, I think everyone is going to be linked to us,” Brown commented.

“Canterbury has got a situation where everyone agrees they have to shed some players.

“It is from my understanding James Graham is definitely a much more favoured player from Des (Hasler) and he’s not on the list of players they want to go, whether that changes I am not too sure.”

Talk has also surrounded the Sydney Roosters’ Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

“We have had a couple of chats, he is one player that is off contract, he’s got a number of things that tick the box for us and he’s very experienced,” added Brown.

“He has won a world cup, a grand final and he’s also been at the Roosters when they were down at the bottom and what’s required to help get it back up high.

“He is also a player that wants to help younger players and he’s a big outside back and we feel while we’ve got some very good outside backs, we’d also like to have one or two bigger ones.

“Where it all ends up we don’t know but he’s certainly a player that we have some interest in that’s for sure.”

Brown maintains they want to find the right players to fit the Club, however long that takes.

“We certainly know we need to find some experience but whether we get six or seven players or three or four players, that will determine by who will be available,” he said.

“What would be more frustrating is paying for someone that’s not going to take the Club back to where it was ten years ago.

“If we hold our nerve long enough, I’m sure we’ll get it right, it just won’t happen tomorrow.”

Reynolds would have been a solid signing but not for 800k a year the Tigers can have him at that price. If your spending 800k plus you want a rep quality player and for mine Reynolds is not that he is a mid tier 5/8 just like Mullen was and we were overpaying Mullen. I would rather go after someone like Connor Watson, Cameron Cullen, Drew Hutchinson or even try and grab one of the Titans halves as one of them will have to make way at the end of the year than pay overs for Reynolds.

Some sources had $950k, but hell I would not have paid $800k (every year anyway).

Mataluino would have been a nice one but that's if he stays healthy too. Funny thing is I think him and Brooks can work as well.

Reynolds will benefit by having an organiser like Brooks next to him but I don't think he will produce good enough form to justify his wage. I would have liked Mataluino too his a big forwards with a handy offload but he will be 29 next season with two dodgy knees, I think the Tigers are taking a huge gamble offering him a three year deal I would have offered him two years max and no more than 450-500k.

Surely browny is just keeping his cards close to his chest. If we havnt made an approach to the dogs for graham and/or tolman i would be shocked

Interesting how Browny mentioned Teddy to roosters and Woods to dogs but didn't say anything about Foran to dogs tho. Still don't think we aren't a chance but it's just interesting.

Apart from the obvious ie we **** why don't players want to come here even for overs ?

The things players look for when deciding to join a club -

Money
Location ( generally players want to live in Sydney of brissy )
Coach
Club reputation
Chance of winning a premiership
Opportunity ( for players who can't break into their current side )

In our current state we can only offer money to marquee players none of the factors are strong points for us. That's why at this point I think we should target guys who are looking for an opportunity or guys from the area so we have a few more positives going for us .......

We have signed blokes looking for an oppurtunity ie elliot, barnett. Aswell as developing the best of our local juniors in the system ie lamb, safitis, stone.
Browny has made it clear the next step of the rebuild is to bring in experienced marquee players, i dont want the club to settle for more elliots and barnetts.

Nothing wrong with young players like Elliot, Barnett, Pearsall, Pauli Pauli, Tom Hughes, David Bhana, Jacob Gagan, Sam Bernstrom, etc who come here on second tier money looking for a chance to crack firstgrade. If they don't work out, we lose nothing. If they do work out, we gain a good, young squad member.
What we don't need is old guys on more money than they are worth.
Two types of signings are OK - young guys on next to nothing - and genuine star players in positions our squad is short.

Yes you're correct mate we've bought some guys like Elliot and Barnett looking for a chance and brought through the young guys. He's also brought in some experienced guys who have played for winning clubs like Burher, Rory K & Starling to help the younger guys around. But the next step in the rebuild hasn't been achieved we're not winning games and we don't look like we can make the finals in the next few years, so we're still not an attractive side to join. Brown has been unlucky as I've pointed out in a previous point he was probably depending on guys like Burher, Rory, Mullo, Hodko, Mataero & Sims helping us win some games and as it stands for one reason or another these guys aren't in the side ......

Having the next step of the rebuild to sign a few superstars is fine when your looking to take a already competitive side to that next level of being contenders. But when you have only won 2 games in 2 years and can't attract top players we should really be looking at 6-7 experienced NRL players to bring the overall quality of the side higher. Players like Tolman, Tagatese, Hoffman, McCrone, Elgey(if Titans decide to stick with Roberts and Taylor) etc.

Build a good competitive team then look to add X Factor players on top. Suddenly We would be a lot more attractive to those top players. Never know in that time we may have bred our own superstars.

I cant see why players would not want to live in newcastle i have lived in brisbane all my life and love coming down to newcastle would love to live there.

Clubs don't release good established players cheap. Those are the ones they keep.
Buying journeymen players has never worked, because good ones aren't for sale at a viable price.
It's a pipe dream.
Everyone says, let's just buy a bunch of established guys - easy.
Never seen it work. Never expect to see it work.

Was well said by Brown in the article very transparent and honest I thought. I'm still confident he's the guy for the job. We do just need that big signing, even for the players mentality. I'm confident Gags will stay unless someone matches his current pay.

I want Foran so bad.
