2017 NYC Holden Cup

http://www.newcastleknights.com.au/news/2017/03/15/nyc_preview_round_3.html

Pre-view from Lowrie. He still lists Tom Starling, but doesn't talk about him for the 3rd week in a row. I have to say, I find that bizarre. It was the same after the Murwillumbah trial - Brown talked up Phythian and Hodko and a few others, but not a single word about Starling.

Anyway, Lowrie rightfully talks up Matt Cooper, who is killing it in his first 2 games at fullback. It's funny that he played one game of NYC last year on the wing and had no impact at all. If they dropped Meaney back to NYC I reckon he'd have to play wing, because Coops is a real specialist fullback, and a very good one.

And Why is starlo not interviewed? He is the captain! Jack Johns is the Hot Media Favorite. No offense to Jack, but Tom is the captain!

Knights down 22-14 after 60.
But it's NYC, so 30 points can be scored in the last 20 minutes, as fitness starts to tell.

26-22 to the Knights after a length of the field try, finished off by prop Cam King.

14 minutes to go.

FT | Knights 26 (T: Kouka-Smith 2, Johns, Cooper, King, G: Cooper 1/3, Johns 2/2) defeat Rabbitohs 22

Gutzy win.
With big Eddy, Butts, Saulo, Brodie Jones and Sam Stone all injured or unavailable, we really are running out of forwards. I hope a few are back for next week.

Early stats are up (they will be updated later).
Tom Starling is credited with 49 tackles made and 7 missed. He must be exhausted from covering for our lack of forwards with decent sized motors.

Matt Cooper had 18 runs for 129 metres. He now has 4 tries, 5 line breaks and has run for 430 metres in 3 games.

Sam McIntyre had a crazy 22 runs for 180 metres and 35 tackles in his 3rd game of NYC and his 3rd game as a forward. That's off the charts good.

Mitch Andrews ran for 262 metres with only 1 line break in 15 runs.

Is Cam King related to Josh King? Cam looks a likely lad.

Resurgent NYC Knights beat Souths

Sat 18th March, 01:57PM

The NYC Newcastle Knights have recorded a 26-22 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides battling blustery conditions, the Knights came back from 12 points down at half time with the talented work of Knights five-eighth Jack Johns and fullback Matt Copper laying the platform to edge out a tough win.

Just 10 minutes in, a spectacular leaping try came via Knights winger Dean Kouka-Smith, Matt Cooper kicking against the wind and failing to convert.

The Rabbitohs came back with a quick reply, Souths fullback Dylan O’Connor sprinting through the pack for the Bunnies first.

Then it was a slide across the try line for Johns in the five minutes following.

Down the other end, the Rabbitohs making room in the left pocket for Bailey Shiach-Wise to score in the 22nd minute, before Adam Doueihi levelled it up with the kick.

In the last 10 minutes Souths turned it up another notch with two tries coming from Doueihi and hooker Phoneix Hunt to lead the Knights 22-10 into half-time.

After the break persistence paid off for the Knights, Kouka-Smith crossing the line for his second, although the wind continued to hamper kicking efforts.

Good metres gained led to the next four points, landing in the hands of Cooper, who weaved through the gaps to score, Johns converting straight in front.

And then minutes later, another red and blue try came via a length of the field run, Hayden Loughrey offloading to big man Cameron King.

Johns made it two from two to put the Knights back in front and get the win, 26-22.

Panthers v Knights

The Panthers are starting to look like the team we all know and love following back-to-back wins over the Tigers and Roosters.

The halves pairing of Dean Blore and Jarome Luai is coming along nicely, while Caleb Aekins has made the second-most metres in the NYC.

Newcastle's roller-coaster start to the year continued with a comeback win over South Sydney enough to secure their spot in the top eight.

This should be an even match with both teams ranking well in all the key stats after three rounds.

Tip: Panthers by 8

Lowrie's preview.
It's good to see O'Hagan get his first run against Penrith.
When our Mathews side destroyed Penrith in the 2014 grandfinal it was O'Hagan who stood out. I expect there will be a lot of players from that game in both sides. The Knights had Cooper, Gibbs, Musgrove, Birch, McIntyre, O'Hagan, Saulo, but they also had Starling, Brodie Jones and Kurtis Dark, who along with O'Hagan and Cooper, were the big five of that side.
They won the minor premiership, the premiership and the national title at a trot.
