Tevita Pangai Jnr

So far our recruiting for 2019 has been pretty dismal.

Apart from glasby I think they've done a great job to date.

Ramien alone (and not being subjected to another year of sione at centre) gets a gold star.

That said some of the names being thrown around since Mooney left are concerning.

Funny that Gardner ruled out Lodge earlier this year because the club didn't want his type of person around the club, only for us to offer him a good deal. Shows we are desperate I guess which isn't a good sign, you'd think Gardner took some convincing to even offer Lodge a deal.

Personally I have no problem with Lodge, obviously what he did was terrible but people make mistakes and if they repent and do the right thing afterwards they deserve a second chance ( excluding rock spiders and mass murderers ).

Ill near bet Glasby will be our best defensive forward next year by a looong way, he may actually get us a slow play the ball out of the opposition similar to what Slade gave us.

In what regard Lord? I don't think he will make anywhere near the same amount of tackles as Guerra but I think he will have a higher % of dominant tackles.

Just the workload mate though I am sure if Guerra's workrate can be shared he'll dominate the ruck a bit more too.

Also worried about Glasby's minutes being he normally only goes 30'sh.

Absolutely he didn't get a lot of help this year other than Slade. Agreed I hope we get a few more minutes out of him what I did notice is he's very good at landing on his front when taking the he ball up giving a quicker play the ball also.

Ramien is an outstanding sign, Lee will be an improvement, but what we need are props, and we don't seem be able to attract marquee props.

What props have been available? Seems like there hasn’t been many marquee props change clubs this year.

If clubs aren't allowed to approach contracted signed players before their respective deadlines does that extend to players approaching their former teammates?

Depends on your definition of marquee, but these were all available at some point;

Tim Glasby - signed
Junior Paulo - ?
Shannon Boyd - tried but Titans offered more $$$
Jarrod Wallace - tried but Titans offered extra year
Josh Papali - ?
Matt Lodge - said no
TPJ - said no
Lesson Ah Mau - tried but wanted to go home to NZ
Payne Haas - ?
Aaron Woods - ?

We defiantly tried with Woods, he wasn't interested in leaving Sydney.

Josh papali wanted 800k by memory and I think Brown wasn't interested in going past 600k.

We almost had Ah mau with a good deal put in front of him, though the warriors came up with extra funds and matched ours.

I think we also tried with junior but he wasn't interested.

Looking beyond the NRL, are there any props worth chasing in the ESL?

If there's a target still under contract in England that would need a transfer fee to break contract, given the situation I wonder whether Brown would consider looking in this direction.

Obviously every player on that list passes the "is better than Josh King" test. Outside of the ones who flat out don't want to come to Newcastle, is there anyone that you would wreck your cap for by making a godfather offer?

Guys like Taupau (won't leave Sydney) and Klemmer (dogs will fold before they let him walk) are just pipe dreams.

Nope, the shelf is empty and everyone else worth chasing is locked in long-term. Unless we go shopping overseas or someone gets spit out in the off-season coaching shake-up, we'll be relying on young or fringe forwards in 2019.

What makes things worse is if we don’t sign a decent forward there’s also stuff all coming off contract next year as well. Only players worth looking at would be Napa, Tetevano, Alvaro, Hetherington, Ofahengaue and Tanginoa. Still holding out for some shock player movements or an unhappy Klemmer.

We sacked Tetevano because of domestic violence. I wonder if the Knights would be willing to have him back. He is a quality prop.

If there was an offer made to Lodge, I can't imaging that Tetevano would be any less likely to be considered.

Last I heard he's still living on the Central Coast and commuting to Sydney, wouldn't be much of an adjustment driving north instead of south. Guess it'd come down to the offer and who he'd rather play for.
