Nathan Ross

Ross could easily cut it in the ESL if he wanted to. But with us improving as a squad he is a backup at best

The secret to a good first grade side is to have backup in reserves, need 6-10 capable first graders in your squad, our aim should be sign up first graders push back those deposed to reserves, get rid of those that will never make it, have a competitive reserve grade that covers all situations and you have a competitive club, yes club, Ross along with Sio, Denniss, King, JSaf, Barnett etc fit that criteria ..

Addition to above, we need to keep those players, Ross, Sio. Barnett, King Denniss as backup, not first graders, we need to be competitive in both firsts and reserves.

I said 5 your saying 4 that's 9 out of 17 so we need at least 9 top line players to make this a competitive top 4-8 side, personally I think 4 next year, and each year after we will get there.

Knights looking to offload cult hero

Newcastle are trying to offload cult hero Nathan Ross for next season.

Ross had a disappointing year in 2018, with injury restricting him to 15 games and just two tries.

But that was in sharp contrast to the previous two seasons, when he scored 19 tries in a struggling Knights team, winning the hearts and minds of the fans.

Ross has just undergone major surgery to rectify groin and hernia issues that held him back this year and the Knights have told rival NRL clubs and English teams that he is available for 2019 despite having two years to run on his contract.

At 29, Ross still has plenty of good football in him once he regains full fitness and his versatility - he can play fullback, wing and centre - should see him get a contract.

Pete Mata'utia just signed a 3 year deal to play fullback for a top 4 side (Castleford), so Ross can shine in ESL.
If Toulouse win the million pound game and get promoted to the ESL it would be perfect for Ross. They would be recruiting hard, and he has played there before and is a bit of a club legend.

Any decent NRL back would go well in the ESL.

If Ross leaves, I wish him all the best, apart from his one blemish asking for a pay rise, he has tried his best for us in his time here.

Didn't gel with Moga which affected his form.

For years we have complained about not having good first grade quality as back-ups for spots but now we move on solid back-up players with experience and decide to just keep using juniors before thier time like 2016?

Could it have been Moga didn't meld with Ross, two sides to every story

Either way, Moga coming to the team really needed to be the one to gel in my opinion. But in either case, I'm yet to be convinced by Moga at all, seems the type of centre that the ball stops at every time with little thought to set his winger up for the try. Strikes me as a selfish player.

But this thread isn't about Moga.

Ross doesn't want to leave, but is looking. As a club it is not beneficial to the overall culture to keep players who are not willing to compete for their position! Good luck to Rossy, but taking the easy option is probably best for him and the club.

He said he's willing to fight for a position from reserve grade, but he's waiting for Brown to come back so they can have a chat. Presumably to see if he can genuinely fight his way back in the team or if his papers have been marked & it's time to move on.

I remember a few times how we were complaining about moga passing to no one as Ross was out of position.
I think it was more a case of 2 players not knowing what the other was doing due to no time together

Moga had no pre season and was rusty as hell.
It will be the same next year.
He was terrible in his games for us so far.
Logic says he should play some reserve grade to get the rust out after what amounts to 18 months since his last good hit out, but Brown will rush him back as soon as he is half fit.

I'd be happy for Ross to leave. Agree 100% that he tried his hardest however he was a shining light in one of the worst teams in history. No doubt our signings show we are on the up and unfortunately Ross is nothing more than a quality backup option.
