Kalyn Ponga

I love how quickly people turn on players in this place. I reckon if we go back to threads from last year and read the posts about Lamb, we would be seeing most singing his praises.

A fairly ordinary year later, and he is suddenly plod ordinary.

You're missing the point here. Thoughts on what Lamb may or may not do in the future aside, apparently we should listen to Joey about moving Ponga to 6. The last suggestion he made about our halves was a colossal flop.

Yeah that's right, what's the issue? Plenty of players are 1 year wonders and don't kick on.

Watch my lips Kurriboy.

Always was a spoon half back.

I thought you were against the lynch mob mentality? Or only when it's a player you like?

In the end the club will sign him or not, out of our hands. But at the moment, we don't have anybody else in lower grade that is capable to stepping in to NRL for the halves.

It's a bad argument anyway, we all know Ponga would make a fantastic five-eighth. It doesn't take being Andrew Johns to see that. The argument is more Ponga wants to be a fullback, so why in god's name would we move him against his wishes.

I think Joey's point was that we can buy another quality fullback - they are a dime a dozen.
We'll never buy a 5/8 as good as Pearce, although we do seem to have one hanging about at the back of the field.

As our signings stand we have Ponga, Watson and Pearce who when all are fit and well have preferred spots so can't see why we just don't let them play them and if we sign anyone else then if good enough will be considered. I would just like to see them play 4-5 games in a row together with a strong pack, so far it's been frustrating with all the injuries and continual changes.

That long pass...it's come off long 3 times hasn't it? Maybe shelve it for a while. Need Watson in the team to take the heat off KP also.

He's a bit of a character.
I mean, Danny Levi is a bit of a hipster, but Ponga is some sort of bohemian.
With him running around in bare feet and dressing like a hobo, if all the kids in Newcastle follow his lead they'll all look like Mo McCackie.

“I’m not too sure what my future holds whether I’m going to stay in league or change codes but if I was to go back to rugby union I’d probably want to strive for that black jumper, it’s the pinnacle.”

Caught this from LU and thought it was pretty interesting.

Tbh if he gets us a premiership he can do whatever, frustrating if he leaves but you'd have to respect the guy. No doubt he could walk into the All Blacks in his late 20's if his form is even remotely similar to what it is now.

We'll struggle to keep him after this contract whatever he decides to do long term.
He is already worth more than the generous contract we signed him for, and if he becomes a dominant playmaker by the time his contract is up, it's bids above a million a year as a starting point, and maybe he might be leagues first 2 million a year player.

If ponga does stay in the halfs we would IMO have the best halves pairing in the comp. Backline and second row are good , if we could get 1 or 2 more good props we could be pushing top 4 .

I would add a top line fullback to that list.
And a goal kicker/someone to do the kick offs.

A lot of ex players reckon that f/b is Watsons best position so Ponga to 6 and Watson to 1 could be the go .

The surprizing thing about his first game at 5/8 was how well he worked in defence, not just his individual tackling ability, but the way he got Denniss and Sio staying on their man and cleaned up the whole structure on that side. I didn't expect that, but he does surprize me every game.
