2019 half back options

Defender1

Matthew Gidley
Been in the press this week that we are chasing two half backs for 2019. Thought it might make for some interesting discussion...

Who should we chase?

Personally, I would love to see us have a crack at snaring Jahrome Hughes, Riley Jacks or Brodie Croft from the Storm.

Sign Corey Norman - eels want him gone.... we need to chase a quality half with experience. We have played with an inexperienced half last 3 years and received 3 wooden spoons.

Luai, jacks, Croft etc could just stay at their current clubs if they want to sit in reserve grade.

Mitch Cornish is good enough to fill in if Pearce goes down, and is another rooster which seems to be a requirement.

You want to pay Norman a mil to play reserve grade? Honestly he might not get that much but he will still command big money what ever he does.

He's reportadly on 900k next year. But if Parra want him gone badly enough they should pay part of his wage. If for some reason we did sign him it wouldnt be to play reserves.

I can really see Brown angling to slot Watson into the bench utility role next season!
It will be interesting who they go after to fill the 5/8 role????
One thing I know is it will be an established first grader and Pearce will have some say in who it is!
Any thoughts??????

In the face of what Brown has said publicly? Unless he is lying which I haven't really seen from Brown. He seems to give it to people straight. Brown has said he likes what Connor has done at 5/8 with Pearce in the team, he also said Watson hasn't been given long enough in the role with Pearce in the team.

If you take the above on face value, then they aren't looking to buy a 5/8 to replace Watson as they are happy with him there. Not now, not for next season. Brown has said he wants a running 5/8 and Watson is it.

Hell, Brown has even said they may not make the finals this year, but what they can do is build their combinations for next season. It's crystal clear they are not looking to recruit a top 5/8, or halfback.

What they need to be doing is getting a backup halfback, so if pearce gets injured we have someone capable of coming in and doing a good enough job. Cogger and Lamb both failed at the task this year.

Whoever they get must be happy to play reserves, so won't be an established first grade half. That leaves players young and on the up but not quite cracking 1st grade yet.

'T'aint much good Billy asking for opinions just to disagree.

ooops sorry LongProng I replied thinking it was Billy in his anti Watson mode.

I never rated him much but Tyrone Roberts would be an option. He was at his best when playing second fiddle to a more dominant half in Mullen maybe he could do the same beside Pearce if need be?

Phythian - no reason we can't bring him back next year.
Brendan O'Hagan - NSW under 20s halfback in tonight's game. Played for NSW under 16s and missed under 18s when he was injured while training with the squad.
He won a Harold Mathews title with us - also in the side were Brodie Jones, Tom Starling, Pasami Saulo, Brayden Musgrove and Matt Cooper - all guys who trained with our senior squad this year and will likely be part of our senior squad next year (Heath Gibbs and Kurtis Dark were also in the side and could be in our top squad next year).
Brendan trained with our under 20s last year but decided to take a year off instead. This year he is playing for Canberra and led them to a good win over us a few weeks ago. He scored a length of the field try in that game - always was a very speedy halfback, which I think Brown would like.
