Sione Mata'utia re-signs with the Knights

He is certainly an above average player. In fact he is an outstanding player when compared to every player to play any game of NRL.

If you compare him to every footy player to ever play football at any level and judge his success by that yardstick he is sensational.

I have no interest in comparing him vs every other player that didn't make it as a career nrl player.

I am interested in comparing him to the other, current nrl players actually playing at NRL level.

Sione is good in many positions but not great in any. That's what makes people question his worth.

If he could play like he did tonight week in, week out then we’d have a quality centre on our hands. Was excellent tonight, just needs to find that consistency.

Was good on both sides of the ball tonight. He needs to come back through the middle more often, he’s a strong runner and has decent footwork that can really trouble opponents middle forwards.

The challenge for him is to do it next week. Hopefully he can.

Ramien put the exact same play on last night. Seemed to be a case of whatever you can do I can do... well just as good.

Sione defending in side his half back seemed to work well last night. I hope thats the answer to his issues and he now pulls out efforts like that most weeks.

Like what I think Billy or Slots said a little while ago, if Sione was a bit heavier & taller, he'd be a great prop.

I’m still hoping he loses abit of size (not a huge amount) and gets abit more of the speed he used to have and we can make a decent outside back out of him.

Correct mozza. It was noticeable he was slow chasing down his opposite number Saturday night. Sione's best defensive effort for the season for mine.

Matangi does alright at 5'11 107kg
Past 3 games
116m vs us in 48 minutes
109m vs broncos in 28 minute
151m vs Warriors in 31 minutes

Did well Saturday lets hope he can string together some good games. Would be nice to have 3 first grade centres on the books next year and 4 if you count Dennis.

All of the slanging and trading of stats aside, isn't the purpose of this thread to discuss what to do with the kid?

With all of the defensive lapses and rushing up out of the line we've seen from him at centre, especially when the team is struggling, he's shown some solid improvement and touches of the class we know he has.

If he maintains and builds on the performances over the last couple of weeks in particular, most critically in defense, I expect to see a much stronger second half to the season from him.

Likewise, if he gets better at drawing the outside player in and can start getting quality ball to the winger he'll be in a stronger position come next season to hold his spot.

If not, and we see Moga come back, he'll be spending plenty of time in Reggies. With 2 top-line centres in the squad, Sione is probably going to find himself in more of a utility or depth-type role. Unfortunately for him, we have some more reliable 14's to pick from.

He has been absolutely no better defensively. Lamb got moved to the left. Still bad. Fitz gets moved to the right. Still bad. Defending against 12 versus the titans. Still bad. Number up 4 on 4 against the Sharks. Still bad. We've ended up at Brown having Watson defend at centre on Saturday night.

As Beaumont says the future is the forwards, but he doesn't get a start over Fitz or Barnett who both play 80 minutes. So...

Ramien is going to be playing right centre next year.
