The point Rodwell was making is that Ponga shouldn't have the expectation of leading the side on his shoulders, even if he is taking it on himself to do that with Pearce out.
As a general rule, we shouldn't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Our first priority this year should be doing whatever it takes to look after this kid's development - and if Rodwell is right that too much responsibility is not good for him right now, not putting him in that position seems the smart move.
It is open to debate if Rodwell is right though, because Ponga just keeps lifting every week. He learns a new skill just about every game.
