The trouble is that we are too soft in defence so 3 men in a tackle is a must now. If we had a bit more agression about our defence 2 in a tackle would be sufficient. Look at how de belin tackles and how much everyone raves about it. Its because he tackles the old school way and it's effective 99 times out of 100.

DeBelin is a very good forward, has been for a few years but now matured and experienced, admittedly surrounded by a very good pack, think he will make SOO starting side this year.

Love the way DeBelin said he loves folding opposition players in half and he did with Sione
That's exactly how all our forwards should be going into games. Wanting to hurt the opposition instead of just making their tackles. Defence win games by being aggressive. It leads to mistakes and possession to create attacking opportunities.

When your attacking and score you always seem to lift intensity. Which makes a forwards job easier if they feel they can produce metres for the backs/halves to work with.

No its not,
Hia has been around 18mths.
Wrestle in the tackles has been around for over a decade.

How does hitting and driving at the hip cause head knocks?
The defending play today is all about hitting high and wrapping the ball, our side is still to young and weak to be able to hold the strength needed for 80 minutes to make that reliably successful for us.

So going back to the 90yr tradition of hit with the shoulder at the hip could be a successful one.

Im sure you've heard the age old saying ( they cant run without legs )

That's me using the current terminology but I think it was Belamy few years ago said said the first thing they have to do when get a juniors is to teach them not to tackle low because it's too dangerous with the bigger faster athletes we have now days to tackle around the legs.

Yeah you hear it in commentary every time a player gets knocked out by going low & collecting a knee. Players are coached not to do it because of the risks of getting a hip or knee to the head.

Its because the current mob can't do it effectively. Its all about timing. I dunno how many times I've seen blokes already set to tackle with their head down and the attacker is easily 3 to 5 steps away.

Yep, it is all about head placement when you go in to tackle - if you are coming in from the side, your head goes behind the waist, ar$e or thigh. If you are tackling front on, you make sure your head is to the side of the hips, waist - I learnt this stuff as a 6 year old.

I destroyed both my shoulders from tackling (was a hooker for most of my time playing, when hookers actually 'hooked' ;)) but I never got a concussion from tackling...plenty from stiff arms and the old second rower upper cut in the scrum:D, but never from a tackle.

And DeBelin is a text book exponent of it - the shot he put on Sione was a perfect example that would have knocked the ball loose on anybody...of all the dropped balls last week, I didn't find much fault with Sione for that one - just bloody good defence.

Remember a game at home against the Bulldogs where Bennett hooked Hilder for a couple of dropped balls ? That day Kasiano charged onto a ball close to the line, Hilder took him head on old school technique, Kasiano got snapped back and the ball came free. I keep getting told there's no room for what I call copybook tackling technique in today's game because it allows a quick play the ball. That's fair enough but next time we say a player can't tackle we probably need to think a little. It's pretty much accepted that Gagai can't tackle which is rubbish because the perfect head on shot he cut JWH down with says he can. Most say Sione can't tackle. Of course he can tackle and tackle well. He just makes bad decisions. For 3 wooden spoons in a row I've watched opposition players waltzing up field with 3 Knights players in tow. Surely the first man in cutting their legs off and stopping that has got to be better than conceding 30 a game. The last year we appeared in the finals we had Hilder and Buderus to plug the leak.

I dunno about you but my coach always said if you count to 1 then got impact your timing is perfect. Anything more then you need to stand up for a tad longer.
Also told me to tag someone and defend with them so you were always working in 2s.

When I was 17 or 18 I hit an "old bloke" with what I thought was a great swinging arm. I got a tad nervous as we were about to pack the next scrum and the "old bloke" at hooker was smiling at me. I remember packing the scrum but unfortunately that was all I remembered. The smelling salts were putrid and the mud on the cricket pitch at Harker Oval was cold. The old bloke's name was Peter Edmunds.

Haha that is gold. That is what is missing from footy these days. True toughness!!

My memory is pretty farked, though i remember always counting to 3 before getting up and square.

We have people complaining about the offloads.
We have others complaining about 3 defenders walking up field.
We have people complaining about missed tackles.
We have people complaining about the basics.

Now imo 90% of those complaints would be gone if we went back to the 90yr tackling style of hitting and driving at the hip with the first man in.
Yes we will still see some offloads in the middle, though out wide those offloads wont happen nor will the overlaps as the first man in would have made the contact and tackle.

100%. With an aggressive attitude to defence, attackers won't have time to offload albeit will be sloppy if so.

But doesnt cutting a bloke in half and dropping him to the ground allow for a quicker play the ball then wrapping up a player and wrestling him to the ground. wrapping the ball up and slowly tacking him to ground gives the defensive line more time to set i always thought.

You get no reward for a copybook legs tackle. Ref starts screaming at you to release the moment the ball carrier touches the ground.

There is a reason every team in the NRL wants numbers in the tackle.

You still have 2 in the tackle, first in at the hip.
Hitting at the hip stops the attackers momentum why the top defender wraps the ball and wrestles them to the ground.
Once we learn to have confidence in our D the rest of the team should be set within 5 seconds anyway.
Did any of you even football

The current way we are tackling has us walk up then get 2 or 3 up high waltzing back up field for 3 meters and our line is a mess with some staying up and others falling off the play which then kills us when the offload pops out.
Put it this way, for 5yrs we have had the worst D in the nrl.
Why not try change our style.
