Knights Salary Cap

Gagai probably killed off his Knights career by playing so well for Queensland.
After that it became very clear that he had been phoning it in for years at the Knights.
Saying he phoned it in is a bit harsh, he always put in but at times i think he tried too hard to make things happen and that led to alot of errors. That and he can't tackle

spending money is never too hard.
spending it well seems to be a real problem for us though.

Billy, it appears to me that the Knights recruitment this year has been selective , efficient and frugal the only player I can think of that may be getting overs is a young gun who may well be what the region is crying out for ( long way to go before I am convinced but I will give him a go - a lot of so called experts have backed him, not just at our club ) .

The RPLA is pushing the salary cap barrow because there are a number of current players who don't have gigs this year, probable because of the U 20s vacuum , but why should we pick them up if they don't suit our requirements?

And overpaying underperforming players sent to reserve grade contributes to a succession of wooden spoons.

As far as front-ending player contracts goes and the possibility of players skipping out at the back end when the take-home is less, I'm of the view that a player who seeks a release in this instance should be required to repay the club the amount they were front-ended to balance the books. For example, if a player contracted for 500k a season for 4 years is front-ended and paid 600k for the first 2 seasons and 400k for the final 2 leaves in the final season they should repay the club 100k for the final season. This would be a major disincentive to break a contract, unless both parties were happy to terminate the contract early.

Just a thought.

Cap space doesn't win football games. Underspending every year achieves nothing.
Come on mate, building a good roster that gels takes time and money. Getting value out of the cap is one of the keys to winning premierships. Saying that we have been underspending is a bit silly especially considering how horrible our cap was before Brown & Mooney got here.

We need to spend the salary cap, but from now on we should only spend it on really outstanding players.
I've thought all along that we should only be spending on top line players, but you have to acknowledge that our recruiters have tried to attract the best, and haven't been able to get them across the line, so they have had to settle for young guys with good potential and some old guys who hopefully still have a few miles on the clock.
The salary cap we have left should be spent on SOO standard players like Pearce, or we are just spending it to boost reserve grade really.

It's the truth though. They were way under this year apparently. Projected to be way under again in 2018.

But this is a total non-issue because there is zero benefit in being under the cap again in 2019. If they miss out on the marquees for 2018 just front load and get some godfather offers ready for origin players in 2019. We won't be a completely embarrassment on-field which has got to help too.

Absolutely. There are always players coming off contract every season.

Giving the guys we have already an opportunity they've earned or been brought in for should provide a clearer picture in the first quarter of the season of where we need to bolster the squad.
With the cash ready to splash on the players who become available in a proactive measure as opposed to a reactive measure (such as spending the minimum cap) will put us in a far stronger position later in 2018 and onwards.

Being forced to spend and pay overs for the sake of it is ridiculous and undermines the strategy that Brown and Mooney have been working on.

Phil Gardner's comments in the Herald seem bang on and have my confidence that they'll do the right thing by the club in regards to managing the salary cap. Good to see he acknowledge Mooney had done a great job up until now as well.

That's the point though. If your options are to pay ridiculous overs for a genuine rep player in 2019, or not spend the salary cap for the third year running, you pay the overs.
