2017 NYC Holden Cup

Yeah, I think Johns has gone from one of our worst defenders to close to our best over the season.
I thought Croker had some very good minutes, but Eddy is still way below where he was at before his injury.
The Broncs forwards were too strong early on - King and Saulo would have sorted them out if they started - and Starling and Jones would have been strong enough to compete too.
Our spine players got the better of them once their forwards started to tire - but too late.

Good fightback. That Cameron King is a gun. Johns and Cooper were pretty disappointing though.

I'm not sure if he is a gun yet he was very lazy in defence and caused a few errors.

Lowrie talks about the season.

When you think about it, we lost some gun players for all or part of the season - Meaney, Lamb, Cogger and Starling would have been a decent spine - probably our best ever in under 20s. We also had Sam Stone out for the whole year and guys like Denniss, Saulo, Jones, Gudgeon and Cam King playing up for some games - that's 10 really good players out for all or some of the year.
If the aim is to develop young players, we have had a great year. We have never had so many guys have time in firsts or reserves as this year, and most of them did just great.
We'll never know, but I think if we'd spent the whole salary cap on firstgrade and had the use of most of these guys in under 20s, we'd have had a great year. We beat some of the top sides with what was essentially a half strength team.

Don't the commentators love Luke Huth. As soon as he comes off the bench they don't shut up. Great kid, Fantastic player, Bright future
Same with Matt Croker. Both 18yo with amazing talents

What rating (A-F) would you give our Holden Cup Team and NSW Cup Team Billy ??

Did their seasons exceed expectations or did we fall short in your opinion ??

If your main aim is to develop players for higher grades, we had a really good year. King, Fitzgibbon, Amey, Meaney, Pat Mat as a forward, Saulo, Starling, Brodie Jones, Braidie Smith and Robson are all guys who reached new levels in reserve grade and in NYC we saw Jack Johns improve in leaps and bounds, as well as Matt Cooper, Heath Gibbs, Loughrey, Mitch Andrews, Cam King, Sam McIntyre, Matt Croker etc all went well above expectations.

The teams were very up and down. Both teams had some great wins against top teams, and won fair and square, but they also both lost games they really should have won.

For player development both teams get an A.
For results, a C.

Not having Starling, Saulo or Brodie Jones on that list should confirm they are training with the seniors. Matt Cooper is not there also, which I hope means he is being fast tracked to the seniors as well.
I know Matt Croker is a year younger than those guys, but i'd have him training up too.

I don't see that big Tongan prop who partnered Saulo in Ball last year on that list. He played some NYC this year too. I hope we haven't lost him.

They young ones in this team wont play u20s until SG Ball is finished. They might do u20s pre season but will end up back in SG Ball before the season starts. Maybe after the Ball season a handful will go up to 20s & play

what is happening with 20s next season? Everyone says it is changing but does anyone know how? Will the boys still be aired on fox sports?

One thing I read seemed to say that reserve grade and under 20s would be played at a separate venue to firstgrade and the 20s would be playing against the same clubs as reserve grade as undercard games.

Who knows Frank. The competition will have 16 teams from both Queensland and NSW so that would make a draw for games as a curtain raiser to the NRL matches almost impossible as some of the State Cup teams will not be from the NRL Clubs, such as Wyong, Mounties etc. The costs of running the NYC is the reason quoted by architect NRL's Brian Canavan why the NYC will become Under 20's for the State competition.

Will Foxtel cover the game? I would guess so depending on the times games are set down for. Who knows what the Warriors situation is? Maybe play in the NSW competition would involve less travel and less cost for them.

I reckon it is pretty messed up and the NRL need to get organised. Bring back National Reserve Grade comp.
