Rumour: Knights looking at Maloney

If Souths get Maloney for 1M a year surely they have to un-load some talent .......

Supposedly Adam Reynolds will be free to look around.

All seems rather stupid really tbh.
Sharks have Maloney 31yrs old on 600k next yr and seem willing to let him go to pay Cronk 34yrs old 1.2mil ??
Then Souths are willing to offer Maloney 31yrs old 900k to offload Reynolds 26yrs old on 700k though 5yrs younger.
Im not a smart man but common sense says thats all rather stupid and ridiculous chain of movement to by a guy for 1-2yrs before he retires.

I could understand the Dogs moving Mbye on at 750k to fit Cronk in as they are under huge public pressure atm to get a title.
The dogs getting Cronk on there roster would 100% mean Graham would be free to look around as well.

doesnt make sense for cronk. Didnt he leave so he could move to sydney? So not sure he would be a halves coach at Storm?

Well then he isn't good enough as a professional it shouldn't be affecting him

Well then neither is Maloney ready for professional footy then cause he is having contract issues at the moment and some say caused Cronullas last defeat.

It is a known fact that Footballers perform best when they aren't worrying about their future - as businessmen don't make great footballers, the same is said the other way ?

A professional sportsperson is there to perform with out affect from the outside. Also they have managers to do there business. Also is it a fact or an urban myth that the media reports when they are looking for a story

I just slumped in my chair reading this.

Well if we put the right players around Ponga, Lamb and Levi in 2-3 years they will be able to tear teams apart I guess.

That's not a weak argument is it ?

With limited exceptions, few players can take their game from ordinary to extraordinary in a struggling team.

Perseverance and experience can eventually lead to results, but not always.

Mentoring, especially on-field, from elite players in key positions (think of Cronk, Smith, Thurston) and coaches who are able to extract more from their players than they believe they can yield far greater chance of success.

With the (hopeful) acquisition by Wests and (crucially) recruitment of a few key players to refine the outstanding talent we have coming through things will turn around.

Personally I would like to see Pythian given a shot at 5/8 as he is a half anyway just wether he can stay on the field for an extended period ....Although Kevie Walters says he thinks Cronk will play SOO next year so maybe we are still a chance with him.... however slight that may be ....

MAloney to Knights if they can get Cronk?
Monday Bunker: Will Cooper Cronk replace James Maloney at the Sharks?
The Daily Telegraph
COOPER Cronk has been coy about his playing future but Phil “Buzz” Rothfield has revealed the Sharks are seriously eyeing the Storm star.

The revelation comes on the back of chatter that Cronulla five-eighth James Maloney is looking for a top-up on his $600,000 a year contract.

It’s believed the Knights have made a major play for Maloney and could table a deal worth $1 million dollars a season.

The deal hangs on Shane Flanagan’s ability to convince Cooper Cronk to move to the shire.

“If Cronulla can get him [Cronk] Maloney will be released to go to Newcastle, which I think would be great for the game,” Phil Rothfield said on the Monday Bunker.

“I don’t necessarily agree that 18 months into a three-year deal that he now wants out but I can understand the Knights would be offering him a million dollars and he’s on about $600,000 at Cronulla.

“But Shane Flanagan can’t release him until he has a commitment from Cronk.

“I do know Flanno rings his [Cronk’s] manager George Mimis once a week. I would say it is probably 50/50.”

Maloney would be awesome, but, we could sign Jesus to play in the halves and still struggle to control and close out a game!!!

gets to be in Sydney which is what he wants
1 last big pay day
then gets to move into media after

id hope thats enough to get him to sign for them! only if we get Maloney though :p

How dirty is Maloney going to be if they don't get Cronk though, and instead of getting a release to earn $1mill a year, he is forced to stay at the Sharks and play for $400,000 less.

If the Sharks get Cronk, what other options does Maloney have besides the Knights?

Unless there's another club desperate for a half, why pay massive overs on a player without a club?

If it unfolds that way, would offering Maloney an incentive-based contract be a reasonable approach?
Say 4 years at $800k per season with a $200k upgrade on the next season if we make finals?
