Reserve Grade defeated by Tigers

The Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights were defeated 42-26 by the West Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers took a 24-6 lead into the break; Jacob Gagan the Knights' first half try scorer.

Despite another from Gagan in the second half, and a double coming from forward Lachlan Fitzgibbon, the Tigers’ were too strong.

Watson Heleta punished the red and blue with four tries to his name, as the Tigers ran away with a 16-point win.

Heleta Quad Seals Big Tigers Win

The Wests Tigers have recorded back-to-back wins in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW, following a dominant 42-26 win over the Newcastle Knights at Leichhardt Oval.

In a slow start to the season, the hosts recorded their second win last week, beating Blacktown by eight points. The Knights, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back after last week’s disappointing loss to the Bulldogs in Cessnock. Newcastle were led by Trent Hodkinson, who was dropped from first grade duties for the second week in a row.

In a high-intensity start, the Knights found themselves with the better of the field position in the opening five minutes of the match, but came up empty handed. The visitors looked to have had the line wide open, but a one-on-one strip saved the Tigers.

When Wests finally got possession, a high kick brought about a mistake and they were soon on the prowl. But it was the same story for the Tigers who forced three repeat sets at the Newcastle end but could not capitalise.

The home side’s depth was tested early, with Jack Littlejohn leaving the field for a Head Injury Assessment.

Discipline was proving a concern for the Knights, with back-to-back penalties allowing Wests to set up camp on their line. It was only a matter of time before the defence cracked, with second-rower Kyle Lovett crashing over for a 6-0 lead.

Penalties again gifted the Tigers downfield and a fortunate bounce off his own grubber kick, Jordan Rankin extended his side’s lead to 12 in the 22nd minute.

The home side were taking control, making metres up field at will, and when centre Watson Heleta weaved his way through, the score was 18-0.

Needing to be the next to score, Newcastle had some luck off the kick-off with an error putting them at the right end of the field, and a few plays later Jacob Gagan found some space to score in the corner.

The Knights had a lucky escape inside the final six minutes of the half when Tom Hughes was lucky to prevent a try after dropping a high ball in his own in-goal. But their luck did not last long with Heleta strolling over for his second, as Wests took a 24-6 lead into half-time.

There were little chances early in the second half as both defences held strong. That was until an error from the Tigers off a Hodkinson cross field kick gave the Knights easy field position. The margin was again cut to 12 when Lachlan Fitzgibbon broke through a tackle from close range.

Another Wests mistake from the high ball, allowed Gagan to record his second of the afternoon, and get the red-and-blues to within eight.

The Knights appeared to have made it three tries in a row when Gagan regained a chip kick - only to throw the ball forward to teammates with the line wide open. The Tigers made them regret that missed opportunity, marching back downfield with Heleta finishing off to push the score out to 30-16 midway through the half.

Newcastle continued to have trouble containing Heleta who crossed for his fourth of the afternoon, and made the mountain for the Knights to climb almost impossible.

However, trailing 36-16, the visitors did not stop trying; a short kick off gave them possession and a cut-out ball from Hodgkinson allowed Hughes to hit back immediately in the corner.

But they could not continue that intensity in final 10 minutes, with Wests adding further to the pain when winger Nathan Milne pushed the margin out to 22 points.

There was a consolation try in the dying stages to Newcastle’s Fitzgibbon, who brought up his double, but it had little bearing on the result.

If the Panthers can beat Blacktown tomorrow afternoon, the Tigers are assured of moving off the bottom of the ladder.

Some inside information here for you billy! Bryce donavon had a shoulder reconstruction in the off season! and the mail is he will be back in 3 weeks! he had been carrying the injury for the last season and a half! most of last season needing injections before most games???(gutsy effort)

Good to see. I wondered why he wasn't getting a game when we were so short of fullbacks. The bad news for him is that Meaney is starting to look good at fullback.

That being said we are playing the Tigers who sit last with a -124 differential so it's a game we should win

Strong? Beaten by last place and falling further behind. For the experience in the side it is a shocking season matched only by our NRL season. We may well be a chance of two spoons this year.

It was a strong team for reserve grade but the performance wasn't there
 
The other interesting Stat is the starting props, Paea and Pauli, played similar minutes for the second week in a row, and Paea had much better numbers again. Obviously Pauli has a bit more impact, but with a lot of our hard workers out injured, I think we need someone who toils away more at the moment.

Match Analysis

Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights coach Simon Woolford hopes his men will come back refreshed after a week off.

“We probably needed the week off, we have had a tough start to the year,” said Woolford.

“We lost three, then we won three and then we were on the back of losing three in a row so hopefully the guys have gone away, had a few days off ready to play the Mounties.

“They have been in the top couple of teams in the last three years so we certainly need a spike in form as a group and as individuals.”

The ISP coach has gone with a near unchanged side from Round 9.

“The last three weeks while we haven’t got results we’ve played really well in patches and we’ve let ourselves down in others,” Woolford explained.

“We are searching for that consistency, we are talking about it a lot, saying and doing all the right things at training and come game day we need to put it into practice.

“I have said it for a few weeks now, if we can get back consistency in our performances, the results will start turning our way.”

Woolford maintains last year’s runners up, who are sitting third on the ladder, will be no easy beats come Saturday.

“They are a pretty good side all round, they’ve got some big forwards, they’ve got some experience in there like Jeff Lima and Glen Buttriss is their hooker, he’s played a lot of NRL and is very experienced.

“They have got a couple of young guys, Lachlan Croker in the halves and Zac Santo at the back, he’s a very dangerous player too so they’ll be a well-balanced team.

The reserve grade coach is calling on his experienced players to step up and lead the younger pack.

“You come to expect that from your guys like Pauli Pauli, Mickey Paea, Sam Mataora, those are the guys that we need leading the way,” Woolford said.

“I am confident if they do that we’ve got a good young squad that will follow but we do need everybody turning up, knowing their role and executing well and if we do that we’re going to put ourselves in a position to get the result we’re after.”

Where it will be won

Woolford believes getting rid of lapses in concentration in defence will do the trick.

“We defend well for periods and then other periods it is just not important enough to us and we let easy tries in,” he said.

“We need to get there game day with a defensive attitude.

“We need to put it into practice especially against Mounties, they’ve got a lot of points in them and they win a lot more games than they lose so we need to be spot on.”

True true, just shows how far his dropped down the list, could move Pauli to lock with Paea and Mataora starting... that is what id do

King is the form forward in the team according to most I have read. I can't see it. He was early in the season, but looks a bit tired now. Maybe the week off will do him good and he'll hava big one tomorrow.
